Ode to my Mother
My mother in the depths of her pain and sorrow
had a strength and tenacity that all should borrow
selfless sacrifices should be an example to follow
she was stoic to the end faithful to her vow
she endured her husband cruel blows
shielding her children from his punches
waking up with black eyes and bleeding nose
enduring the pain as she went about her chores
she was a lynch pin, holding everyone together
loving my wayward brothers even as they wandered
working in the paddy field to feed them
thatching the roofs to keep us all warm
the years piled on her and her husband died
leaving her alone yet she was freed
of the shackles of his own disappointment
for his own lack of achievement
years after her strength waned
her body could no longer withstand
the burden of her duties as a mother
so, she laid down to rest and slept forever
I the least of her favorites was by her side
watching her as the roses on her cheeks recede
sending her to her final resting place
saying goodbye with a confetti of rose petals
I haven’t visited the grave to date
for she will always reside in my heart
she may not be a saint
but she will always be our mother
had a strength and tenacity that all should borrow
selfless sacrifices should be an example to follow
she was stoic to the end faithful to her vow
she endured her husband cruel blows
shielding her children from his punches
waking up with black eyes and bleeding nose
enduring the pain as she went about her chores
she was a lynch pin, holding everyone together
loving my wayward brothers even as they wandered
working in the paddy field to feed them
thatching the roofs to keep us all warm

I reckon that those from The far east are ill-treated and considered not as human beings but like animals, due to the
laws that govern the states and the rituals of the old folks who still take them not as wives but as maids and servants....
Unfair laws still abide in the 21 century, alas !!! what a world.,
Peace on your mom, may she dwell in heaven for her goodness and patience..........

We are not in the far east. I belong to a tribe from Borneo in South East Asia. We are a member of the Commonwealth (Commonwealth of Nation) therefore our system of rule is fashioned accordingly. So we are not primitive. No, we don't think of human beings as cattle, and we don't take wives as maids and servants. In my tribe headman and chiefs had sometimes been led by woman through the centuries. My father was just abusive like many other bad fathers in any other country in the world.

You're a very brave woman for enduring such a a harsh life. Telling your story in rhyme seems like an apptopriate way to tell your story. I wish you well in future days.

Thank you for dropping by and reading. Dragon🌹it wasn't all harsh for us, for we were children climbing fruit trees, swimming in the river etc. Mom kept us safe, fed and warm.

I don't know what a dialogue has to do with a comment but the comment box is being turned into a pulpit. Continue your beautiful words Grace and consider the source.

I love true life pieces, like this one Grace. Life can often be harsh and unrelenting, sadly without rhyme or reason. Your poem conveys the tribulations and the abundant strength of your matriarch with a beautiful honesty and a poignant poetic ease.
Introspection at it's best!
Good luck in the comp, my friend

This was a touching and honest write. It's hard to understand why some people choose to stay in abusive relationships, but given certain circumstances it's always tough.
Excellent tribute.
Excellent tribute.

She stayed because of her children. She was a strong woman who outlived her husband more years than they were married.
Thanks for reading, Wally.:)
