You can hide so much behind a smile.
For a while I was fascinated with taking portraits and then studying the alignment of what a person’s eyes said as compared to their smile. Quite often they do not match.

Yes, it can often be detected. But it's pretty easy to deceive most people, especially the ones who don't really want to know what's behind that smile anyway...
