Anonymously Giving
I wasnt born with a silver spoon
the only silver I can remember was the tinsel on our tree
at least we had a tree
There werent toys nor gifts
but somehow, that was ok
we had each other
I remember getting a box on our porch as a kid
it had socks, gloves, fruit and dinner items
not toys
I was young and we didnt know any better
and me and my siblings always looked for that box
that box was special...
At least to us is was
and every year we prayed that whoever donated to fill this box for us
we hoped they knew how much this helped us during this time of year.....

Author's Note
I never experienced this. My Dad did. Hes 79 yrs old. For a while him and his family used to get the Goodfellows boxes for many a Christmas. I never knew this until recently.
Its been humbling to say the least. Ive always donated, yet didnt know the power of what these donations do for families.
Until my Dad told me his story growing up poor.
We always donate. Whenever we can. No matter what it is.
Happy Holidays. If you cam give. Its the best gift there is.

For many years I donated blood to the Red Cross, and one time some dude asked me why I didn't go give plasma at some other place where they paid $50 per visit, to which I replied..."Hey easy come, easy go for me, but folks who need blood need it way more than I need $50".
Beautiful tribute to a beautiful sentiment about paying it forward.
Seasons greetings to you and yours!

St, Jude is a huge. We also do a lot for the Fire, Police , EMS and Military. Any heartless yet heartfelt giving is a plus in my book. Love it, and you! Merry Christmas!

Dear ML,
Brava. Beautiful message. Amazing and humbling story in this write that is just so poignant. An exceptional reminder of what the season is truly about and I’m grateful to you for that reminder. Sometimes my cynicism gets the better of me. Lovely piece. H🌷

Thanks Billy, I try! I dont want for anything. Im also a humble person. I dont need much to live and be happy. As long as those around me and those closetest to me are happy, then so am I. And if I can help others be happy, well Im all for it. Joy and hope are beautiful things. <3 Merry Christmas!

This was my childhood. We didn't have much and I remember one year when I was about 10 the doorbell rang and when I opened it there was a box of gifts for my family. Something for each of us. Had it not been for that unexpected box of gifts, we would have had nothing that year. My daughter and I have traditionally donated gifts and resources to those in need since she was a toddler. We don't do much in the way of gifts at home, but it feels better to give to others.

Oh my gosh, I am all teary eyed typing. I was raised you help others, no matter the size of the help. Food, clothes, toys, etc. Even a box of cereal and some milk goes a long way to those in need. My daughters are grown now 20 and 18. We donate to so many different things This year they want to also donate their time at a soup kitchen or make stuff/bags for the homeless and give them out. Warms this moms heart knowing Ive raised awesome humans! Hugs, love and peace to you and Merry Christmas. <3

The truth is hard to swallow, when you or a loved one goes through tough times. Your poem is real, powerful and well written.

Well before the war broke out in Ukraine, my parents were part of a charity that delivered donated shoeboxes full of gifts to underprivileged children. They always used to come back from their missions with such stories of appreciation from the kids, and it takes a kid getting excited over a woolly hat to realise that kindness is in the smallest acts.
I like that you’ve taken this story nugget and made it your own. I think we do justice to our stories when we tell them well so that they live on.
Thank you for sharing

Im huge into giving back. I volunteer all the time, yet keep it to myself. My biggest heartache is kids and animals. Always giving back to them.
Thanks dear. appreciate you. <3

I experienced quite a few years like this growing up. Its provided me with an ability to not comstantly be craving material things. I dont find happiness or contentment in gathering things. Life is about moments, feelings and impressions.
