the secret word

“Once exposed, a secret loses all its power.”―Ann Aguirre

it comes from deep within a shell,
          pressed closely to the ear,
                    whose music no one else can tell
                              but he who holds it dear.
                                        i hear it in the ripple of
                                                  the gently flowing spring:
                                                            a word of patience and of love
                                                                      the cooling waters bring.
                                                                      i guard it like a sentinel,
                                                            its treasured sentiments
                                                  to keep concealed from talk and tell
                                        for mere convenience.
                              it is a bond twixt kindred hearts,
                    a code against the throng;
          essential theses it imparts,
to save the evensong.
