crucial moments
“Rivers don't drink their own waters; trees don't eat their own fruits. The salt seasons
the soup in order to have its purpose fulfilled. Live for others!”—Israelmore Ayivor
a river carries life,
a river carries death;
a river carries pleasures,
a river carries pain.
some, swept away by strife,
return not from beneath,
but perish, as lost treasures
on ocean floors remain.
no one who dwells above
survives by passing chance,
for there are crucial moments
that teach us how to choose.
some practise hate, some love;
some limp, some dare to dance;
some court life’s lethal torrents,
some fate themselves to lose.
today is mine to give,
today is mine to gain;
today is mine to compromise,
lest needlessly i die.
o let me choose to live—
let it not be in vain;
give me the vision of the wise,
my darkness crucify.
