On the River
FROM FAR BENEATH THE BLANKET OF SLUDGE
THE BELLIES OF BILLIONS OF FISH BULGED
CLUMPS CLUNG TO THE TANGLED STRINGS OF MY NET
AND ALL I COULD HEAR WERE THE GROWLS OF MY GUT
AND THE GROANS OF THE GULLS OVERHEAD
THE BELLIES OF BILLIONS OF FISH BULGED
CLUMPS CLUNG TO THE TANGLED STRINGS OF MY NET
AND ALL I COULD HEAR WERE THE GROWLS OF MY GUT
AND THE GROANS OF THE GULLS OVERHEAD

mountain
that majestic
standing sentry
watching over
life below,
sounds echo
of beauty
playing among
your trees,
those misty
clouds
are your halo
as light
traces
your crystal
shroud,
the flowers
in the meadow
at your feet
bloom
so genuine,
the ripples
of water
runs through
your veins,
there, i find
such peacefulness
in your
presence.

water's life and feels alive
Waves on the rocks a' crashing
In it human feet go splashing
And elsewhere in the swollen river
'gator tails go thrashing
Water may be stagnant
or it may be thus moving
Sometimes softly dripping
at times forcefully gushing
In brooks babbling
In streams gurgling
In springs bubbling
In rivers running
From faucets freely flowing
or from pipes coercingly spurting
At times noisily sloshing
But in lakes musically rippling
In it diving and wading
In it refreshing bathing
Or spic and span...
In it human feet go splashing
And elsewhere in the swollen river

Midnight River
a luminescent glow falls from the moon
peaking through translucent sky
reflecting off of the glimmering stream
reaching down and gliding pebbles
almost skipping with them
moss tickles her soles
an emerald fern
transparent cloth drapes over her bare flesh
soon wrapping her thighs and ascending her torso
sealing her chest with fabric
as she steps into the midnight river
a quiet soul
who breaths of clouds ...

The First Day Of Fall
I welcome you, Fall
A much anticipated change
From color to color
Not as crisp nor
Quite as cold
As I would prefer
But greeted happily
In this little southern
Fishing town where
The river often smells putrid
And the pumpkins sprout
In time for when
The annual fall festivals begin
A much anticipated change
From color to color
Not as crisp nor
Quite as cold
As I would prefer
But greeted happily
In this little southern
Fishing town where
The river often smells putrid
And the pumpkins sprout
In time for when
The annual fall festivals begin

orientalism (for Susan)
orientalism
sharing a bed with you
feels like floating down a river
in japan with cherry blossoms overhead
to scent my journey.
your voice is a necklace of haiku
that seduces my soul.

Rivered Directions
This place is magic -
the silt already knows
settles down
as if there were no dangers here
and the fish won't swim upstream
to flex their flecked black tails,
and the dragonflies don't mate
or rest upon a palm,
that the chaos of horseflies
don't hammer at thighs,
and the wings of damselflies
don't shine a seasick,
sun-blasting blue,
the frogs aren't afronted
by fat footprints,
the algae doesn't convince us
to scale as brash lizards,
the shade of a tree
isn't godly and obscene
-ly green, ...

Head north in the morning
Beyond the reach of work and worries
Passing old houses sprawling hillsides
That look too close to home
Waterfalls on either side of passing storms
Rotten barns slowly returning to the
Encroaching forests in empty pasture
Forgotten and overgrown
Cottonwood and Holly stands
Row after perfect row
Evergreens and willow buds
Dewy grass in floodplains
Flowers crowding out the drains
Cross the river at the bend
Cross again at the mouth
Make the loop
Head south past the obelisk as the day ends
Beyond the reach of work and worries
Passing old houses sprawling hillsides
That look too close to home
Waterfalls on either side of passing storms
Rotten barns slowly returning to the
Encroaching forests in empty pasture

The Paisley River - and other poems of 2022
The Paisley River
The sun comes down to dance on the river
Its colours attract a band of nude bathers
Looking to wash the dirt
From their sweating sun-browned bodies
The river doesn’t discriminate
Like the righteous dead
Paisley currents spin and swirl
All the way from the Persian sand
Across the seas to California
They wanted to get closer to the gods
Before the sun falls behind the hills
The Leaves that fall and Grow back again
Do not sink when your sunshine fades
The joy you felt...
The sun comes down to dance on the river
Its colours attract a band of nude bathers
Looking to wash the dirt
From their sweating sun-browned bodies
The river doesn’t discriminate
Like the righteous dead
Paisley currents spin and swirl
All the way from the Persian sand
Across the seas to California
They wanted to get closer to the gods
Before the sun falls behind the hills
The Leaves that fall and Grow back again
Do not sink when your sunshine fades
The joy you felt...

Come Back
The stars over our village no longer shine for you and me.
And we don’t kiss in the light of the moon any more.
My sorrowful eyes shed endless tears for you, my beloved.
The green willows below the hillside weep for you, too.
How I yearn for the babyish embrace of your tender arms.
Your friends in our hometown wonder where you are.
The songbirds and I are so lonely because we miss you.
When will we look at spectacular sunsets together again?
The grief in my heart won’t go away until you return.
Maybe someday my woeful face...

The grief in my heart won’t go away until you return.
Maybe someday my woeful face...

DRINKS AT THE SANDBAR
Love is the flow
Of the river
We don’t know
Eyes are closed
Toes are up
Where it goes
We must trust
It is true
We may bust
On the rocks
Not up to us
Take our knocks
And give thanks
For the kindness
Of sandbanks
Some nights spent
In their dunes
Which we dent
With our feet
Wrinkled so
When they meet
Sun comes up
On the beach
Fill our cups
Toast the sea
We made it
You and me
Of the river
We don’t know
Eyes are closed
Toes are up
Where it goes
We must trust
It is true
We may bust
On the rocks
Not up to us
Take our knocks
And give thanks
For the kindness
Of sandbanks
Some nights spent
In their dunes
Which we dent
With our feet
Wrinkled so
When they meet
Sun comes up
On the beach
Fill our cups
Toast the sea
We made it
You and me

Rivers
Take me to the side of your river
And let me observe the calm and treacherous
The water lillies and flowers that grow there
And maybe I'll understand the tears flowing down your face.
I'll take you to my river right now
Where the water runs shallow most days
On offdays, the river holds so much
Water overflows onto the banks.
Flowers grew there, but my water is poisoned
Occasionally nothing but blood dominates,
Don't ask me of its origins, don't ask its purpose
I'll take you to my river and maybe
You'll save me from drowning... ...
