Poetic Lessons

I tried
walking in beauty
like the night
All I got
was a
stubbed toe
and a
bruised shin
Lesson: turn the light on

How did I love him?
I counted all the ways.
On one finger.
Lesson: toss him back in the sea

I travelled
the two
diverged roads
To discover
they were
a cul de sac
Just spinning
round in circles
Lesson: stay home

Treading softly
so I wouldn’t stomp on
his dreams,
there were so many
I’d have to float
to avoid a collision
Lesson: live separately

To be or not to be,
I’d like to be
But, when he said,
 “O’ Captain My Captain”
it confused me and
I decided not to be…
with him…
Lesson: listen to your mother
