Accipiter
I used to wake
to early mornings
happy chirpings
lots of different
types of small birds
Now, however,
no sounds can be heard
ever since the new
neighbors have
moved in
When the new residents
are not active ----
usually midday
on through afternoons,
the finches, sparrows
and morning doves
come out to play
and feed
Small birds, their favorite prey
including the brown bats
that fly about at dusk
these Afghan Pine townies
won’t pass up an easy meal
of rabbit, mouse or quail
This morning all I hear
is white noise
and Highway 19 traffic
I love bird watching
from my living space
binoculars in hand
despite my missing
the little birds
chirping again and again
