Fear

One day when I lay woke
Staring into night
Fear followed me
She swam her way in to my bedroom
Snaking through the shadows
And blanketed me
With her dark woollen cloak
Fastened with a leather belt

I tried to ignore her
Tossed her back to the corner shadow
But her belt tightened and squeezed over my cheeks like a gag
Cutting into the fleshy angles of my mouth
Summoning a little bitter taste of red
And my mind began to race
With all sorts of misconstrued fabrications and imaginary dread

“I am alone”
“I am fragile”
“I am broken”

“I am not worthy of enduring love”

Then when you were right there next to me
I kept changing my position in the bed
Hoping you’d notice my movements
Willing you to touch me
But fear kept a small space between us

I started to twitch and turn
I wanted so badly
To invade your private thoughts
Drill into your mind’s eye
Snatch your heart
Ensnare, capture, and drain
I longed to drink from a goblet filled with your hearts blood

No wonder you chose to run away and hide
