3am

Sleep is interrupted
for the umpteenth time
rumpled sheets, dismantled pillow cases
 and my favorite woobie,
all damp with flop sweat

Sounds of the washing machine—
water mixing those bedclothes,
pierce silent darkness,
become soundtrack

Exhaustion floats all around
dusting it's essence
everywhere

A clumsily one-eyed redress of the bed
as thoughts circle
of 'a much better sleep'
intertwined with a hope
that the new crisp sheets,
bring with them that very confirmation

Quickly showered,
hydrated by copious gulps of water
i slide into fresh pj's,
it's almost an instant ease

Smells of lavender conditioner
and linen cotton bed spray
soften my disposition
coaxing me... in

Waves of wild heat
still randomly roll across
my death valley-esque landscape
like a Mercurian tide at high noon,
radiating out in fiery tongues
burning away secrets

Adjusting the ac
to fully compensate;
there's something about that hum
when it first kicks on that lulls and relaxes—
i imagine ice cubes clinking in a glass

Setting the ambience,
music
lowly imbues
total darkness,
helps trigger sleep mode

-anticipation favors the deprived-
(i whisper)

... into my reset of goodnight

Just a tiny glimpse into what turning 50 can periodically look like. Luckily, it's only been nights that are few and far between. The joys of aging gracefully (sarcasm) is sometimes fraught with speedbumps of night sweats, cold showers and sleeplessness.
