Shape Shifter
I've inhabited many rooms
for varying lengths of time.
In each I learned
a new shape that fit,
and sometimes it felt like home
(until it didn't)
and the people felt like family
(until they didn't)
and the shape felt familiar
(until it just
didn't)
And I'd go through another door
by choice or by force
and learn another shape
in another room
and it would feel like home...
And another storm would come
and another wind would blow
and suck me out another window
into another room
and shift me into another shape...
And I'm starting not to trust
that feeling of home
because storms always rage
and there's always another room
and I wish I could just
find the one that fits
the shape of me.

A fitting analogy (pun intended) that I relate to immensely. I appreciate the honesty of this. For some reason we humans love the idea of boxes even though none of us really fit in them. It seems the more we try to, the more we lose or forget what shape we really are…without a box. As for me, I’m still figuring it all out.

I'm beginning to think it will never be entirely figured out. Maybe that's ok...?
Thanks so much for the read and your thoughts.

Dear K,
Shape shifting is exhausting. For me, every time I shift it’s a whole new personality and I can’t keep it up. And yes, each new shape claims equal parts loneliness and sadness no one ever sees behind the pretend “happiness”. 🥸
You’ve touched several nerves with this insightful poem. H🌷

Dear H,
Thank you... it is exhausting! Although, every time I shift to a new room/shape, I think "oh! THIS is me, I've arrived!" And then eventually find out I haven't, quite...
Maybe one day I'll learn to just BE.

Losing trust in what you thought was a foundational part of your life… can be devastating. This write elicits a feeling of grasping and clutching from me, seeking a safe space to call my own. Many emotions subtly portrayed, and that feeling of a lack of belonging speaks loudest. Well penned, k <3

Oh... safe space and belonging... you've hit a few nails on the head there. Those things sometimes feel hard to grasp, even though my life is actually very good. Maybe I'm just ungrateful?
Thanks for the read and comments, and making me think.

Hi Cara,
I'm sorry for your loss. My mom died unexpectedly last year. I know exactly what you mean, especially that urge to escape...
Thanks for reading, and for taking the time to share this connection with me. Wishing you peace & comfort.

Thank you for taking time to read and comment!
Yes, I'm thankful for poetry & poets... how odd, though, that the place where I feel belonging is one where I'm disembodied...
Much respect back atcha,

Very relatable, we're always in a state of change but put up these walls to try and stem the unstoppable tide, yesterday was a lightning storm, today not a drop remains under the calm sun, literally in my case.

Yes, I suppose change is the only thing that's constant, and I should just embrace that...

I have a limited number of rooms and now a dog taking up all the quality spots. I guess that's the good news. Lately I've been feeling down though without explanation so your write came at a good time. We can all commiserate together.

The great thing about dogs is they're always happy to fit you in "their" space... 🐶
Sorry for the inexplicable down feeling. It happens. We're here... thanks for commiserating!

I loved the theme k, it resonates with me. Shape shifting to please everyone else bar ourselves.
Your words explained it perfectly.

Thanks, BITS. The problem is, I often convince myself that the shape is really me and I'm happy with it!
I'm glad my words resonated with you. Now, I need to go catch up on your latest; I'm falling behind!

I really enjoyed how this poem was put together and the underlying themes that breathe throughout every stanza, I will have to concur with the previous commentator above on how we always shapeshift to please others but never ourselves, (that shouldn't have to happen of course)
plus I find those who are often a square peg in a round hole are actually the best kind of people, I think we need more of that going around.
It is a beautiful poem that I imagine will speak to all walks of life. :)
Kind Regards
