National Debts

Where Credit’s Due
Tell me friend – how you came to find fright
From pockets poor from fielding such aims
At all you can carry about heights
Built by the promise to pay the claims?

Tell me friend – why you hold the loose vow
To cost yourself more to make much more
Of what wealth flows from you to foul
Your future beyond the reaches wrongs bore?

Tell me friend – Why we work to find wars
On wants of others that abhor thoughts
To believe we can buy and restore
All owed ease decreed by what we fought?

Tell me friend – when should our shame accrue
And weigh today’s urges against our sons’
Who hold debts that damn all promise pursued
For futures never to be what’s won?

Share with me – how we should try to shape
Our freedom for getting what’s not ours
For the price paid tomorrow that rapes
What is bourn then to escape what tars?
