after the war
after the war there were of course repercussions for those who collaborated, women dragged out into the street,
their hair shorn and their
heads covered in tar, men shot without trial, leaving victory feeling much like defeat

Reminds me a bit of a poem, "The End and the Beginning" by Wislawa Szymborska,
which starts with the words "After every war / someone has to clean up ..."
