Mermaid hair

I dyed my hair today.
Just the bottom six inches or so  
of my hip-length, reddish-brown    
crowning glory.  
It's a guilty pleasure  
that I only discovered in my 40s.  
The pleasure part is simple:  
I have red, purple, blue and turquoise  
giving an overall effect of mermaid.  
It makes me happy  
because who doesn't feel brighter  
when they're a little bit Mermaid?  
   
The guilty part is a secret:  
the reason I dyed it today  
is because it's slightly rebellious  
and for the first time ever,  
I was feeling downright defiant.  
Although some might consider it  
an act of self-sabotage,  
it's not really.  
The people I'm defying  
won't ever get to see it.  
They won't know    
about my secret mermaid hair  
but I know—  
and that's good enough.
