Ferocious Appetite
A Collection of Poems by Tanzen Lilly
etsy.com/shop/DeadPoetAccessories
ISBN: NA

This is a micro-publication of a handful of delightful poetry true to its title.  Lilly has a gift for association and insight, and utilizes both in this collection. When a book starts out with A Recipe For Heartbreak, you expect a depressing publication of melancholic and unrequited love poems; however, that's not what you get.

What you get is delight:

I always think of you while chopping garlic
nd I must cook entirely too often
because
The only thing that remains of you now
Is your eyes
[. . . ]

Onions are next
Was I bracing myself for heartache?
The unavoidable sting, and eyes filled
with tears
How have I never realized
I never cook a dish without the two
I think I will go out tonight instead

( A Recipe For Heartbreak )

Each poem contains a clever association which can be taken either as a healthy combination, or an unhealthy one. And that's one of the biggest pleasures of this tiny book: Lilly leaves your perspective in tact.

I remember the first time I caught you smoking.
Flirtatiously I scolded you,
But I'm pretty sure you thought I was serious.
[ . . . ]

[ . . . ]
We interviewed each other over cups of coffee.
As if time was running out,
[ . . . ]

We are like cigarettes and coffee—
We go so well together.

( We Are Like Cigarettes and Coffee )

I recommend this little booklet not only to support a local poet, but because the poetry is quality and the theme solid throughout.

Silence stirs
While
Churning verse,
Symphony of Living.
Flow disturbed
By broken chords,
The rhyming faucet
Dripping.
Submerged in sound
The poet drowns,
Her rhythm fainting
Weaker.
A hunger groans
In drifting tones
The spigot spouting
Laughter.

( One More Before Dinner )

You can't beat this little gem for $5.00! Plus, you're supporting a local artist.

Sanguine Addiction
Gothic Love Poems by Tanzen Lilly

https://www.etsy.com/listing/778130297
ISBN: NA

This is the second booklet of duo micro-publications containing a handful of  gothic love poetry. I was hesitant about this one, because the majority of 'goth' I've read here is like the majority of 'erotic': it falls short of the mark into juvenile diary entries and teenage lust. Lilly defies that perception in this small collection of poetry by combining the cool, dark elements of gothic with and underlying sensuality that is both elegant and endearing.

Just like snow in gothic television
shows
Your love is warm though your touch
is cold
[ . . . ]

( Velvet, Lace and Leather
(And also Your Sigh) )

Each poem contains the definitive elements of gothic poetry, touching on the pain that can be both haunting and daunting when it makes an appearance throughout lives. And while most gothic representations are not light-hearted, this is where Lilly balances it with just enough light sensuality to entice readers such as myself to forgo premeditated notions of genre and engage her works.

Sway, gently sway
Dance to the rhythm of the night
And earthly decay
Stay, darling stay
[ . . . ]

( Fine Gothic Romance )

For $5.00 it's a sweet little hand-bound booklet, not only supporting a local artist, but ( according to the lovely handmade card accompanying the purchase ) 25% of her sales go to 'My Block, My Hood, My City', a program that teaches youth the important of giving back to the community.

How sales of "Death & Ladychyde" doin'? Had several people say they were gonna order. Al these months in hospital have not been conducive to checking NY Times Bestseller List. Still amazed that none of my family have said a word on it.
