Almost September

For years,
life has shown me
I am stronger than
the thorn in my side;
the shadow that follows me;
the raincloud above my head.
 
For decades,
I have fought it,
medicated it,
defied it  
and outrun it.
 
For now,
I slump, defeated.
Just occasionally,
I allow myself to
curl up with it
for a while.
