An unintended treasure
Weathered by lifetimes
long ago stripped of retro sheen
that character though...
never quite goes out of style
60's burnt-sienna swagger
Well loved, used and so worn in.
Memories fleck and mark cider stains
chipped fingerprints
deep milky welts-
absent minded watermarks
forge sigil shadows upon real wood
The type of craftsmanship and function
where old souls remind,
"They don't build them like that anymore"
Passed generation to generation,
blood to blood
Steeped in family tradition
with time gone by
was christened "the orange chest"
an unintended guardian—
keeper of sacred treasure, faith
me and all my secrets.
Over the years,
morphing from simple furniture
to adored fixture.
Nowhere near an antique prize
not worth anything
to anyone else
other than those
original architects of 'lore'
whose genuine love
saw something special
in the unlikeliest of places

Author's Note
I'm the third generation to painstaking patch and somewhat fix "the orange chest" (as it was christened years ago) making it fully functional and usable. It's really nothing special, except to those of us who grew up revering it's family lore. (and it's space saving functionality! ..haha) Tradition, that I didn't fully appreciate until I was older. I cannot help but love it's timeless design and of course the quirky family history.

I always look forward to your visits, my friend. I'm glad you found some appeal in the subject matter, sometimes I can't really be sure if I can write in a way to make something interesting enough... lol..
I try though!!
Much love and appreciate for your kindness, shown.

Well, I don't know about gifted but I do try to learn and improve. Comps aren't usually my forte, but I've really learned a lot by expanding my comfort zone and trying to pen poems I normally wouldn't attempt otherwise.... Which opens my mind and possibly my capabilities.
Thank you for the kind words. It makes me feel like a champ already to know that you felt like you described. I only hope that I can become more worthy...
Glad you enjoyed, a tiny bit.
Much love and warmth sent your way ✨ 💫

As the eighth kid in a family of nine, I was never big on hand-me-downs.
But once in awhile they can be like manna from heaven.

I'm the youngest out of three girls so all my formative years were spent in hand-me-downs, I definitely feel your pain!!
And you're so so correct...
Yes, sometimes it's the unexpected that truly makes a moving and substantial impact.
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts with me and taking the time to stop by!
I'm deeply appreciative 🙏
Be well and be safe out there,

Hey there, Mr B ;)
Competition poems are something of a challenge, so I'm wonderfully glad this one was able to pull you and and evoke the emotions it did.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and taking the time to visit.... means a lot.

Dear BV,
Please tell me you have a stash of VHS tapes hidden in there along with your emergency weed! This is so beyond fantastic. I love the write. That goes without saying but the photo is simply the BEST thing I’ve seen handed down from family member to family member since I passed on taking the family coat stand. This thing looked like Ichabod Crane with the worst case of scoliosis. I’m not sure how it held up any coats and the finish was a light mahogany. I think. It could have been a very faded espresso for all I know. Anyway, all the best for this comp. The poem is outrageously fabulous and the pic. That needs to be your Christmas card this year! H 🌷

hahaha... I think all the family members on that Christmas card list would just howl with laughter if I highlighted the orange chest as the centerpiece for 'Season's Greetings' ... 😂 😂... Omg... just the thought...
Your comments always make me genuinely smile. and I so picture that coat rack!!! lol... It's awesome and productive to bask in your thoughts, as your feedback means a lot to me... I'm so glad you found enjoyment here.
I had a little help editing this one, which definitely resulted in making it a much better read. I feel fortunate for that help and learned a lot in the process..... as scary as I thought that was going to be.... lol.. It helped immensely.
All my warmest gratitude and thanks, dear lady
Seeing you is a favorite!!

When I open one of your poems, I feel excited. You're unpredictable, changing directions, alternating mood, tone, subject, all with your multidimensional voice and slow, rhythmic cadence, that speaks of presence and control. It's hard to articulate the things I feel in your writing, regardless of how much I am praised for it, there's so much that is experienced and felt in your writing that defies the convenient cage of definition.

Daniel,
You leave me at a loss for words.
I can only say that I continue to keep an eye out for your avatar or poem publications in hopes of feeling something similar to what you've so eloquently described above. I've learned such a vast amount from you via your writing style, audio performances and the way you interact with others here on DUP.I know I wouldn't be anywhere close to the kind of writer I am and I continue to aspire towards without your kindness and all that help. It has really allowed for tremendous growth and change, leaving me with a strong sense of fearlessness to try new things.... and how very cool is that!?!!
One of the many reasons I count myself extraordinary lucky in having your friendship. Thank you for everything you contribute here, it's beyond appreciated and it's something that will never be lost on me.
Be well and be safe out there

In so many arenas of life, I haven't maintained a consistent focused on healthy, positive interaction, I guess across the full timeline of living, that would be pretty difficult, as we learn and grow from mistakes, but those mistakes were really not so often something like being cruel, but more like not communicating well enough how I was feeling, so that misunderstandings would fester into something that might have been entirely avoidable, those sorts of things haunt me. Anyhow, my point with this grave memoir lol was to say that I'm glad I've almost always managed to stay focused on what's important here, to listen, try to connect, be kind and focus on the truth that we're all here to be heard and seen and felt. It's meaningful to me that it is meaningful to you. 💖💖

So I will end my evening admiring your two pieces of art. The cabinet and the write. Both functioning with priceless value.
Do not underestimate either.
Well done, I can appreciate the attention to detail of both.

Your poem sang to me of memories engrained in wood whose stain brings nostalgia into the fore of the heart. My grandfather took up carpentry as a passion in addition to his job. His creations are cherished by me to this day. The desk he made fills my heart with the deep love of his hands. Your song of love for a family treasure reminds me that some furniture is more than a household item but is a repository of a legacy often from long before we were born. This poem is a treasure in itself.
