What If

These two small words form a powerful  thing
When put together, a question they bring
One that implies contemplation and remorse
Would be still be together had we changed, of course.
What if?

Alone in the dark, a tear in my  eye
I'm missing my wife so bad I could die
What if? I cry, What If?

What if I’d gone left instead of right
What if I’d just hugged you instead of fight
In place of saying I can’t, when I can
Would you still be in the arms of another man.
What if?

What if I’d talked instead of shout
What if I’d known what true love was all about
What if I could have figured out
That with properly placed faith there would be no doubt.
What if?

My heart aches with the thought of what could have been
If only I could have changed
Now I am empty and full of regret
A broken marriage lost to sin
What if?

From this point forward, what ifs are no more
I choose to go through fate’s door
To live without regret and look above
For guidance, answers, and yes, Love

And to you, my love, with respect to fate
I am and always have been your soul mate
And although our marriage has come to an end
Remember this,  I am always your friend.
