a summertime's worth of liberation
The scent of honeysuckle
infiltrates my memories
conjuring long bike rides
banana seats
and double dipped ice cream cones
Those first senses of teen freedom,
watermelon jolly ranchers
building forts
making nightly fire pits
for warding off mosquitoes
From days first light
until fireflies twinkle bright;
being among those friends
was sacred and profound, that group
was certainty in friends forever
Having the time of your life (up until then)
was cemented in all that glorious youth;
night swimming amidst the jasmine
that first kiss, from the red-headed boy
that I always squealed was "Ewww"...
Sprinklers, water balloons
hide and seek in the dark;
my favorite was Kick the Can
being so scared while hiding,
that I swear I was going to pee myself
Sleepovers, prank calls
mixed with attempts at light as a feather
backyard camping, s'mores
toilet papering houses
lawn darts and jiffy popcorn
Summer carnivals, illegal fireworks
collecting money for "Jerry's Kids"
sleeping in the cool basement
watching this new novelty called MTV
understanding in full what' being unique'
really meant
Discovering a solid sense of self
without usual pressures
an oasis of summertime stretched before me
where latitude was happily given
because out of their hair, was also their freedom
And three months
of successful 'emancipation'
was it's own
cherished reward

So very picturesque and evocative, lifting my spirit to a state of purity. Those times leave such an indelible mark on a person, and, this piece has left an indelible mark on my psyche.

It's funny, your childhood sounds like mine. I miss being young. I don't miss being shy, naive, or being the nerd I was. I am glad I lived through it though.
Awesome write.

I wholeheartedly agree with the shyness and other kids being dicks(in my experience) ... my mind's eye I probably glorifies the memories a bit, too.... but these particular summer memories were a tad before those mean girls became a issue for me .... lol... I definitely relate you your comments 100% though!!
Thanks so much for your feedback and the generous list add, Tim
I truly appreciate it and thank you muchly

Oh does this take me back ... my Dad refurbished a bike for me ... with all of the bells (an actual bell) and whistles ... gave it to me for my 7th birthday ...

What a beautiful memory, LilD.
I loved my bike bell... I used it until it broke... hahaha.... There are app bike rental stations throughout Downtown Tampa and sprinkled throughout our historic district where you rent bicycles through the app and can ride all over those particular areas... all the bikes have bells and baskets on them... I've rented them through the app a few times and always wax nostalgic and ring my bell at anyone I ride past that's also on the same branded rental bike... they always giggle and ring back, it's too cute; reminding me of when I was little like that... So awesome!
I really appreciate your thoughtful comments and the generosity of your list add ....
Thank you, my friend 🙏🏻

I try to keep the youth going even in my late 30's. I always think of this song lyric "If growing up is giving in
Then count on me to count myself out"
Then count on me to count myself out"

Nice lyrical reminder to keep that sense of youth alive and well, DC. Good idea!! It's continually harder and harder as the years add up but I still find glimpses of it now and again myself ... lol... I appreciate your sentiments there, very much... Thank you for sharing that, your kind list add and delving into my youth.... haha...
I am so grateful!

Dear BV,
Oh pleeeeeaaaaassssseeee tell me you had the tassels hanging out of the handle bars and a baseball card laundry clipped to the wheels to make that whizzing noise! Because then you would have been on my tricked out bike. Oh my god what a trip down memory lane. The independence of having your own bike. Nothing like it. Fab write. Love the pic. Just awesome.

Hee hee hee!!
Ohhh my, aren't we kindred spirits!!! Yes and yes!! I had bluish-green tassels as well as a white plastic wicker basket with those 70s green flowers the baseball card in my spokes and a bell that broke before too long because of a wipe out that caused a skinned knee that I still have a scar from... hahaha..😂
You said it, H.
Nothing felt like it... NOTHING!
THE FREEDOM!!
I am smiling from ear to ear, in unity of feeling.
So glad you enjoyed it, my lovely friend 🙏🏻

You did so much more here than describe summer in an arcadian childhood. You brought home the meaning of what life was about then. You take me into the heart of what freedom was all about then. I remember so much of what you put into vivid words. And you enlightened me about what it all meant in a way I hadn't fully thought out. That means the world to me.

You beckoned memories of youth and growing up so nicely.
I loved the colorful imagery, the sounds, the tastes, how fun those times were, nostalgic and wonderful.
Excellent work.
