Teach
us to love and laugh
while we breathe;
teach us tradition
and appreciation;
teach us to cook
clean, and save;
teach us to extend
mercy and grace;
teach us to say no
to what we do not need;
teach us to accept
death as a beginning;
teach us to say goodbye
and carry on living

Dear A,
May he find peace with his beloved Leah. Really beautiful homage to his memory. H🌷

Dan...truly an original.
Inspirational.
A tender spirit writing through the onslaught.
I already miss him.
A nice tribute.

And teach us how to bend or break the rules and do it (y)our way.
Thanks for showing us how, Danny.

So, another DU member falls asleep and the wheels of poetry turn slightly slower. Never knew Dan, but he obviously lived it & felt it. Beautiful tribute. RIP.

Ahavati, Certainly, no poem or few small words can hope to capture or do justice to an individual as complex as he, but even still you have written a very fine piece. Dan was a one-of-kind unique individual, and, personally, a man that I owe a substantial debt of gratitude towards. No doubt that this place and indeed the world will be the poorer for not having him around, although it is to hope that he has found some peace in the great great whateverafter.
Rest in harmony, Saxman Dan.
Be well, Ahavti my friend and thank you for sharing this.

I didn't even try, Van. There is just no describing Dan. He was one of a kind and VERY before his time.
Thank you, my friend. So happy to see you back around again.

They are great, but we must be very good and understanding students to learn all those conceptions.

Re. Teach
Feels as much like a prayer as a poem, composed with your judicious use of language to create a rhythm. Is there a story behind the photograph?
EDIT I’ve just seen your Author’s Note.

I'm sorry, Jack. I should've messaged you. I just assumed you knew. Yes, Dan left us earlier this month. Today is a rough day. . .
The photograph is one he sent me YEARS ago when he was on tour. He was playing in Atlanta and wanted to meet up, but I was a professional photographer and had that weekend completely booked. Sometimes there never is a next time.
I'm sorry you didn't know. He really liked you.

Who is cutting onions around here?
Dear Ahavati, I know that I did not get the chance to know Dan as much as I could have except through a few comments here and there in years past. But your rendition here is absolutely beautiful and humble to a man who I now wish (and think I could have connected with our interests in music) could have known better.
Wonderful and beautiful tribute in all it's sincerity.

He was a truly remarkable person, Wally. You missed a great opportunity to connect. Not many knew of his musical prowess. I've worn out his CD Tao & Grace myself.
Thank you.
Thank you.

I'm teaching my son T ball later today so this will stay with me. I dig some baseball and look forward to taking my son to his first big game when things get back to normal if they ever do.

Yes; make those memories! Some of my fondest are my conversation with Dan surrounding baseball. Thank you for honoring his memory in such a way.
