The Gift of the Crimson Crown
- The Gift of the Crimson Crown -
The snow was white upon the ground, warming beneath the sun,
Past the remnants of the cornfields, reminders of a harvest past...
Winter was now in passing too, and a new season had just begun.
I intended to see what lay beyond it, where my gaze was so cast.
In the distance was a white mist, thick and featureless, and cold!
Into which something drew me, unto a world that lay just parallel.
The air was much warmer there, and its' history was often untold,
Whilst for but a single mad instant, I believed I ventured into Hell.
Shattered rocks and rugged wastes, the like of which do not exist,
Outside of nightmares, I beheld, as my feet on the soil walked on.
I saw only wild vegetation, in that domain beyond the palest mist,
Where life existed at all, and had not died in some forsaken dawn.
Whilst there, on the horizon, I beheld a palace upon a lofty crag...
Hearing the echo of someone singing, carried on the harsh winds.
The highest tower of the structure was decorated by a scarlet flag,
And from within its' foreboding walls, came the voice that sings...
A woman or a child, whichever it was my mind had not any clue.
I only know they awaited me, inside that fortress out of a fantasy,
Made dark and twisted by whatever power had taken away blue...
The color that should have adorned those skies I look at fearfully.
It was instead a sky of crimson colors, with clouds seeming afire,
Like none on Earth, none known to the mind of any lucid mortal!
Yet it all felt familiar to me as I felt a calling like a hidden desire.
Perhaps it was after all, that I so stepped across an infernal portal!
There was a massive shadowy arch, with a gate of darkest metal...
Upon which was engraved arcane symbols of a truly alien design,
Which opened of its' own accord, like a flower opening its' petals.
The singing grew louder, and seemed to come from outside time!
Welcome home, I was suddenly of a mind to believe it intended...
To convey unto me, for within that fortress was an alien Elysium.
Servants with pale blue skin, wearing garments of silk blood red,
Hastened about, making me feel this uncanny sense of welcome.
Whilst in the corners out of site, beast-folk labored at harsh tasks,
And all, pointed unto the stairs leading up the grand spire's cone.
I simply strode upward as directed, for I had no questions to ask,
Since in another time, I walked these halls and called them home.
And, I knew the way as if by memory returning from olden days!
In the highest of places, there was a great hall of opulent luxury...
With a throne on a dais, and around it were many beautiful maids.
They placed upon me a scarlet cloak, singing of a hidden destiny,
Whilst before me appeared a lovely woman clad in a black gown.
Her voice sang most sweetly, the one I heard when I was outside...
Whilst she placed upon my eager head a glorious crimson crown.
I closed my eyes, and was back where the mists did before abide,
Near the remnants of the cornfields, not far from the nearest town.
