Used To
I used to watch love take over you
Now I watch love snow on you
And leave nothing behind
But the slushy,muddy remnants
Of long ago confusion
God only knows why or how
You could love me
It's a fairytale in a fever dream
But God, I'm grateful
For all your time
And those grey-green eyes
It started so melancholy
Almost like a sales pitch
Crude and pragmatic--
"Are you happy with your late model?
Come on down to Alexander
We'll beat any competitor's price''
Of course the true beginning
Was "Where for art thou''
And as has been our custom
We found that magic again
In lust and lullabies
In sharing last night's dreams
Over eggs and biscuits and gravy
Over a mountain of poetry
And a vat of coffee
Over anything and everything
Two old souls have ever shared
Riders on the storm
Riding another day
For their very lives
Far better than before
Yesterday again...
Now I watch love snow on you
And leave nothing behind
But the slushy,muddy remnants
Of long ago confusion
God only knows why or how
You could love me
It's a fairytale in a fever dream
But God, I'm grateful

Thank you so much! It's always the goal, you know, to have another poet really jazzed about your work. I appreciate that very much!

Margo,
This was my new favorite of yours. It reminded me of an obscure indie movie that I watched over and over again from the 90's.. I still love it to. this. day. I don't know why your poem elicited that response from me, but I can tell you that's a total 'hit me where I feel it the most' positive comment. This poem, YOUR poem, hit every single note for me.
Just outstanding.
Ty for sharing, Margo
I feel fortunate to have stumbled upon it.

Well, I was just commenting on your latest about how it hit me, though I can never compliment as well as you do!!! What a lovely, lovely commentary. It means the world, and I i.love 90s Indie movies so I think I understand that feeling! Thank you, doll. Very happy to see your pretty, lovely face 😻🧡😻

I actually like The Carpenters a lot. I miss the connection though...unless you were being funny...

Well, I was trying to figure out what you talking about and then I remembered "It's yesterday once more". I responded that way bc when I first wrote it I thought it kind of sucked, so I thought you were agreeing with the whole Carpenter's thing bc people usually make fun of them...anyway!!! Lol...it could have been better...and yes it's awful getting old...truly. I'm trying to come to terms with it though. 😏👵😄
Re. Used To
Reading the poem again, may I suggest it seems like only yesterday when you revisit old poety the both of you used to write & the energetic love you once shared? Coming back to the here & now feels like a real downer. It's just the vibe I get. Not trying to be overly personal.

I can see that, yes. We're good, but it's just reminiscing, you know. We've been together nearly a quarter century so...lol. speaking of feeling old... 😂

Thank you. Yes, that's exactly it...you read what someone else got from it and sometimes people can even pick up on things the author feels under the surface but might not know it. I've experienced that here. Good talking shop with you. Thanks very much for the read and comment.

I read this a few times
There's a flow and cadence that delivers
As an older soul now with 30 years of marriage
I get it
