I've forgotten my defense
So I just don't make a sound
Where my silence carries me
Is everywhere warped and undone
It is of disrepair and disguise
Shameless in the shadows
Of an unexamined life
I tell myself not to trust
Another white flag of recompense
It's just me fighting myself
And we're both out of breath
We have already witnessed
All that can or will happen
In the life of an aging
Shoreless and harborless captain
Our escape may look pathetic, bewildering and wild
Never trust the fortunes you crave
As a rudderless child
A hovel is often a haven with heart
When you have nowhere else to go
Freedom costs much more than pretense
So better the devil we know

Author's Note
It isn't often I have taken a poem that was inspired by one idea with a set of perceptions about that idea and with a few changes turn it into a completely new and different thing. I'm having such a wellspring of pride and happiness.  Poetry is just the best form of communication ever invented...
