Breakfast at Wally's
The sun gets up later in winter
but in my bedroom, a light softly penetrates
through the blinds and curtains,
I think “should I go for a run?”
but I’m only half awake.
The house is quiet
it’s cold outside but the sounds
of birds and cars
are beginning to shape the day,
And I begin to get hungry.
While all my loves are still sleeping
I get the coffee started
I make the eggs and bacon
with a side of hash browns and I say to myself:
“Hey Dove, I’m the one who’s cooking!”

Thank you JB. I gotta say, watching several of her readings and this particular piece just seemed to click.

Thank you very much Ahavati (and for the RL).
Breakfast was served nice and warm. Oh, I forgot to mention the toast with the strawberry jam.

Breakfast at Wally's sounds divine, usually the one doing the cooking. :) Best of luck in the competition

Thank you Kristina (and thanks for adding to your RL).
Yep, those of us who cook have to get up the earliest.

Dear W,
What time do you open? It’s so hard to find a good breakfast place. I enjoyed the soft moments of reflection and gratitude in being able to provide for your loved ones via a hearty morning repast. Delicious and delightful. I wish you the very best in this comp. H🌷

Honoria, thanks for your wonderful comment and adding this piece to your RL.
Before the pandemic I'd get up extra early (go for a run, prep breakfast, clean up, etc). Now it's a little more lax since working from home.

What is it about Dove that causes us to steep in moments of reflection? I love this piece. It's such a warm and intimate peek inside one of your every day moments. Good luck in the comp.

Living in the digital age gives us the advantage to hear and see so many writers and watching Rita deliver her poetry was a treat. I love how we're encouraged to capture these moments otherwise, they're lost forever. Working at a college I get to see authors, poets, activists, doctors, etc. come to campus (well, now virtually) and speak to our faculty, staff and students about their field.
Her piece just felt so personal and relatable.
Thanks for the RL.
