Herbiary I: Vervain
Let Magic In
Enchantment—
worlds unseen;
your pale, lilac face
upon slender, spiked bodice
bare of leaves
Gateway to the in-between
liminal spaces—
magical mystery. . .
channeling medicine
of absentee herbs
within the healer's garden
Delicate as a sip of brew;
but, beware! vertigo of the soul
if one drinks the cup whole
~

I'm stoked by ALL of the end line rhyming! I don't know who Herb is, but you should write about him more often! [nonsense]

Dear A,
So too much of a good thing can be bad? I am intrigued by your study of herbs and their uses from days past. There’s so much to be garnered by the practice and it’s so overlooked.
Tell me when you get to the herbs that vanquish wrinkles and age spots! Please! Wonderful write with tons of insight and knowledge. (And I’m not kidding about the herbs for wrinkles and age spots😉) H🌷

Hi, Honoria! Age spots are easy! Just take lemon juice ( from a real lemon not the artificial you buy ) and rub it on the spot daily after you clean your face ( let dry before applying moisterizer, et al. I'm 61 and have absolutely none.

Excellent work Ahavati. My grandmother still to this day tells me of the herbs and spices her family used to use back in their day. It makes us wonder about ancient times and the remedies they had to alleviate (or stimulate the mind).

Thank you, Wally! There is such an ancient wisdom in herbs, and unfortunately, those who truly know or knew its magic are dwindling, leaving a generation that depends on electronic stimulation rather than nature. It can be very sad to think about - I try to keep it alive for my grandson.

I believe this is a sedative? If I remember right, I did some reading on medicinal herbs in the past, I love lemon balm and spearmint for their mellowing properties, I've never tried indigo of the soul, you have me curious about it :)

Thank you, PR! It has some very interesting Celtic records. Supposedly you harvest it with neither the sun or moon is in the sky ( dawn or dusk ). Thus it's known as the medicine of intersitial times and liminal places ( also doorways, crossroads, etc. ). It says to truly understand her, you must hone your knowledge of the in-between.
An exercise you can do is observe the sunrise or sunset ( or both ) for 10 minutes over three days. Hold Vervain in your heart and absorb the magic of the in-between. If you have something weightin on yoru mind, be open to the possibility of unexpected answers!
Let me know if you try it!

For some reason the essential image conjured here brought to mind paintings of Ophelia floating downstream among the lilies. You have a way with plants and flowers. The Victorian poets would see themselves in your work.
