I will never have that which I need,
a product of neglect
still haunts and follows me
I is-as I am believing as any child would
only under the wrong circumstances
and with different points of view
Holding fast to that which I value
the old days still ring true,
a lonely tv upbringing gone
it’s all I ever knew
I was raised by the idiot-box
the television or TV
everything I learned came from
The “Cunningham” family
The “cable-guy” a funny movie
I never told anyone made me cry
you can learn a lot from an idiot-box
I personally identify

Aww Jackie. This broke my heart reading it. So many children have grown up just as you have, with a lack of love and caring. But, that is exactly what makes you such a special person - you are overcoming that lack and replacing it with love for others and the art of poetry.
This was beautifully expressed and the emotional output was palpable.
Love and light to you, Sweet Friend. xo

*hugs* I hear you. Love the courage of vulnerability here, rendered with lovely flowing touches of rhyme.

Life was different back then. American values were different back then too and while it’s true I was raised by the tv I swear I learned a lot ..

Oddballs bounce to a different tune.
I guess sometimes we need to take our independence, make the most of it, and be thankful we weren't suffocated like some children who walk on eggshells terrified they'll fail to live up to their parents' expectations.
Greatly written, Zazzy.

Powerful and poignant poetry Jackie. My mother deserted me when I was 14 and I spent nearly a year living on the streets...but now, well I give thanks, as it made me the strong person that I am today...but those happy little "Hollywood" families always seemed so unreal.

... a time when the 'boob tube' was an aok option as a babysitter. I completely relate to this, so very much. Mine was just a colored version with The Brady Bunch.
Ty for sharing this, Jackie
So insightful and you're right, can't miss what you never had...

Yes boob tube! I was trying to remember that phrase! I was totally ignored my entire childhood.
I think my parents wanted another son 🤷🏻♀️ They shipped me off to foster care but never my brother Meh I’m over it . I grew up fast so when I became a mom myself I enjoyed being childish with my children, kinda of a make up for lost time sort of thing:)
Thank you Blue for visiting me and commenting and the readers list it means a lot 🤗

Jackie, this poem opened a veil to reveal a childhood of painful neglect, whether intentional or otherwise. Parents don't always 'get it' when it comes to parenting. But, as was stated before, you have risen above it. It created the inspired being that is you and you can share that inspiration with the world. I hope that you have, as your older self, found yourself eager to explore the world and break out of the confines of the 'boob tube' and soak in everything in the real world.
