POEMS AND SHORT STORIES
Life
Cells split quick
Then you kick
Entering a world brand new
Learn to walk
Learn to talk
There's so much learning to do
Go to school
Learn the rules
Have to try to grow up fast
Cap and gown
Face the crowd
Success story at last
Get a job
Earn a lot
Don't stop to take a rest
Have a kid
Blow your lid
Just know you did your very best
Then grow old
House gets sold
Hello, retirement home and friends
When you die
You say bye
But the cycle doesn't...

Extinguished
I'm at the end of my rope
Completely given up all hope
Think things will change? Nope.
Somewhere between love and lost
Is a hefty emotional cost
Where intimacy is shorn and that line is crossed.
Feelings extinguished by unrequited desire.
Yesterday too busy, today too tired.
By this point our drive has expired.
Now, instead, just a cohort in this path we walk.
Not sure if it's really anyone's fault.
But what once was 'us' has come to a halt.
Completely given up all hope
Think things will change? Nope.

Where intimacy is shorn and that line is crossed.
Feelings extinguished by unrequited desire.

Ineffable
This feeling inside me...
The year has gone by.
Countless ticks of the clock whose demarcations don't fit within the confines of calendar.
Yet just a breath in the wind of life
the first note of the aria yet to be sung by you.
And as you change
As our connection undulates and grows,
morphing into something different, but somehow the same,
This feeling in me swells
Bittersweet
Spacious
Breath-taking
Possessive
Curious
Awe-struck
...and four million other adjectives my tongue cannot...

Response to a Crit
Poetic admonitions
Such suppositions
Inside my head you read my thoughts
For as your plea is writ
I sit
Simultaneously perusing past the old poem
You were using
To write your call for more
And when
I submitted my rewrite of that poem
with your words still in my head
I realized just then
That another newer poem was due
and so I bid
patience to you
For it will cum
But it's fits and spurts to start
While renewing the permissions
I must grant my poetic heart
And deleting any...

Zeus's Conquest
Sleeping there, bronze arms, rouge cheeks, blonde hair--you're sublime
Your body heaving up and down as slumber grips your mind
I ravish you first with my eyes, take in the taut muscles of your behind
Transfixed, I transform into my human form, you are about to be mine
You wake, resisting, but your struggles lessen as the pleasure races up your spine
...and now you know what it is, to have been loved by the divine
Your body heaving up and down as slumber grips your mind
I ravish you first with my eyes, take in the taut muscles of your behind
Transfixed, I transform into my human form, you are about to be mine

Sitting on the edge of Summer's world
staring Fall in the face.
Sunny days still linger on
while frosty nights threaten Winter's embrace.
Seasons move us on, ever circling,
ever pushing us closer to the end.
Every cycle through the seasons,
a road with a hidden bend.
So let the frost slash at my face,
the snow seep into my bones.
Let Fall trick me into Winter
Once it passes, I'll be home.
staring Fall in the face.
Sunny days still linger on
while frosty nights threaten Winter's embrace.
Seasons move us on, ever circling,

Floating, flitting through this empty space
Hearing the pounding of my heart reverberate
Against the walls of my empty shell
Where the outside starts and inside stops
I cannot tell
There's something fluid about this embrace
of life
of love
of this entire place
that we call earth
the solar system
the universe
There's something in each breath that tastes of stars
so very far away
And there's a bit of alien words
in everything I say
And soon I feel connected to the light
the dark matter ...

Darwinism
Darwinism
Darwinism failed with me,
Only the fittest are supposed to survive.
Yet here I stand before you,
A living example of failure to thrive.
Darwinism come claim me;
Toughen me up or spit out my bones.
Quit dragging me behind the horse
And pelting me with stones.
Darwinism come claim me...
Please.

And pelting me with stones.
Darwinism come claim me...

There is something wrong with me
Always chosen last
Too sensitive, not attractive enough
Not funny, not fast.
There is something wrong with me
I talk too loud, can't quiet down
I'm too stubborn or too weak
I lack confidence or I'm too proud.
There is something wrong with me
I can never seem to put my finger on
I'm told I'm too apologetic
And then accused of 'never being wrong.'
There is something wrong with me
I'm not worth being good friends with
I'm not worth listening to
And no...

The Faded Flower (working title)
**********
This poem was written as an entry for a competition here on DUP.
***********
The Faded Flower (working title)
'Love is a rose,
you better not pick it'
Because
'Every rose has its thorn.'
But
'Is it a sin to seek the truth
The truth beneath the rose?'
Would
'A rose by any other name
still smell as sweet?'
'A rose is still a rose',
and yet...
Blush-colored cheeks and glasses.
Shards of plastic
Crushed petals,
Naivete forgone, open...

The Hopeless Romance (a Sci-Fi Poetry Competition Submission)
The Hopeless Romance
Sailing across the pink-hued heavens,
A red Rosette Nebula around our ship.
Ten Forward's nearly empty again,
we stroll across the room to where we usually sit.
Looking through the vast, expanse outside,
the window ledge our only parapet.
A spectacular view of the starry sky
while you're swirling your Samarian Sunset.
You look out into the haze and start to theorize
About the strange distress call we received,
but I'm distracted by your stormy, grey-blue eyes ...
