Samhain, Then & Now
Bit like a Bank Holiday really —
those who’d died in the previous twelve months
headed for the Underworld … and all on the same day.
Kinda party time it was
free food, bonfires, lots of dancing around each other
wearing scary masks. I call it
traditional co-operation between the living and the dead.
Not now. Compulsory App reads the obligatory chip
in your shoulder to confirm you’re officially dead
before giving you the green light to walk on down.
If only. Those damn algorithms are always getting it wrong;
they declare the living dead, stop their benefits
freeze bank accounts and remove people out of their homes.
And they declare the dead as living, order them back to work
fine them if they don’t; no support — you’re on your todd.
Jesus, what a mess! Bloody authoritarian technologies
intervening in the natural processes of life and death.
Mind you though, it’s always been a fine line.

Everything is happening all at once...so little control. Powerful poem Josh.

You're right Harry that it's all happening at once - the response to which (imho) is to practiced staying centred in more difficult circumstances. And most of our strategies of control turn out to be an illusion anyway - cherished guarantees out the window. Such is our times. RL 🙏 .

Thank you BK -- and the real impact of AI-technology has yet to be felt. It's being cranked up. Stay well. Best regards, Josh.

I like the way you took us through both old world and new. It really highlights the juxtaposition perfectly. It's all a cluster...total mess now.

Thank you Willow. Technology's promise has always been "to control Nature" (to our liking). Something's gone amiss. I'm trying to write a short book on it; that word "cluster" you used has added another thought; interesting. All the best, Josh.

Dear J,
I thought your insight combining past and present was phenomenal. The dark humor of being declared dead when “authorities” make that error. The original meaning of Samhain vs how it’s celebrated now. Genius. Wishing you all the best in the comp. H🌷

Thank you Honoria again for your comment. I think it's because the words, 'dead', 'live', and 'authorities' carry metaphorical meanings as well as literal, it opens up scope for all sorts of interpretations - you made me read it again myself 😊 RL, honoured too.

Josh this was so well rendered, it's intimate voice is the embodiment of the fireside tale with this bit of cheek and contemporary twist.

Thank you Daniel, and for the RL 🙏 . In my dreams I'd like to address serious contemporary issues in a light-hearted poetic way. Your comment (and a couple of your previous ones) encourages me to believe I might be getting somewhere 😊

I remember in the forums you saying and i am paraphrasing, that this world is not run by a plutocracy or an oligarchy but a technocracy and I totally agree with you. That control over both social systems and nature(environment) has been the major cause for a whole of insane, inhumane decisions by those with power. and those that uphold inhumane systems over peoples lives are so disconnected to any genuine human experience akin to sociopathy.
you write for me when i read this.
just f**king awesome Josh...great work and all my very best on the book writing.

Thank you nomoth, and for the RL. The trouble is partly the power of technology which has far superseded the general level of psychological maturity to say "no" to certain developments -- and partly the mental attitude towards Nature, to 'power over' rather than 'work with'. Put the two together and you have the current situation, including the political responses to 'covid' (whatever one's take on it on how dangerous it is).
Anyway, thanks again for your comment. Glad the poem struck a note with you. All the best, Josh.

This reminded me of those campfire stories adults used to tell children! It contains all the qualities! This is my favorite time of year, and though 2020 has been rough, I do believe there is light at the end of the tunnel.
I always enjoy your readings, Josh. You have a great voice.

Thank you. I think seeing the light at the end of the tunnel requires us all to refocus; perhaps that's what 2020 is all about. Circumstances are forcing people to get clear about their priorities in life. Glad you enjoyed the reading; hope one day to discover a vocation that brings it all together. RL much appreciated 🙏 .

Thank you Wally. Glad you liked it. In this world that seems increasingly designed to stress out the human spirit, I find myself resorting more and more to a kind of distanced light-hearted approach -- perhaps it's some kind of deep psychological defence mechanism to turbulent times where everything feels like it's spinning out of control, and the normal ways of negotiating our way through it all are not going to work any more, but a new modus-operandi hasn't yet been developed. A kind of "in-between-paradigms" reaction. RL much appreciated 🙏 .
