During a cable program, set
in Bordeaux, or elsewhere,
some central region of Gaul
in any case, I learned about
terroir: and how they cultivate
a finer grape, by 'honoured'
methods. An influence of soil,
the climate, and unplanned
changes: all these contribute
to a harvest rich, and strange,
enjoyed by oenophiles going
about, on their summer daze:
unaware of this secret, which
a vintner kept: the strongest
fruits arise, only, by suffrance.

Bordeaux makes excellent French wines. One of my favorites was Bordeaux Superieur Verdillac, V 1978. Amazing year . . .but then, thinking about what made it so adds another layer to the process. Perhaps the sweatshops of France.

In frankness, my knowledge of wine is limited and general. Though I do love rich, deeply-flavoured reds, I have trouble articulating the differences in variety, let alone years. And port "is my only weakness" (Haha.)
What did you appreciate in that vintage, and how did you mean about the sweatshops of France adding another layer?
Thank you, A! That compliment means a great deal. I've worried my poetry is humourless; though if it's scans tart and dry like Riesling, that will suffice (Hah.)

My favorite wine is Argentine Malbec. . .if you have not tried it you should, if you love reds. And, yes, I became hooked on port from my English years of after-dinner port and cheese.
The 78 Bordeaux was so smooth and crisp with light aftertastes of fruit. It wasn't sweet, yet not bitter or dry: it was remarkable, and unfortunately as far as whites go, set the par. Riesling is one I've never had a taste for. . .and I've tried several.

I will keep that in mind! Honestly, I don't know whether I've had their malbec, or not. How long were you in England; and which cheeses did you find go with it best?
That sounds like an excellent one. Was this a white Bordeaux, then? I know there are varieties of both yet assumed it was red (Haha.) It does have a particular sweetness not everyone cares for, which is fair. Almost the opposite of port, for me; light and refreshing.

The underlying message seems to me how all things grow and find themselves by their struggles. Elegantly done.

Thank you, Daniel. I had thought of carrying the metaphor further, perhaps taking a pessimistic turn. I only left it as is, since the poem seemed to resolve itself.

....by suffrance. As in real life. My brother, a wine lover would appreciate also.
