'86 Devils
Channel One Suite/Conquistador/Spanish Fantasy
I was completely psyched when I heard the news
Flomarching.com would launch its own radio
And the band nerd in me cried so happily
I can use my imagination along with the audio
And though the play list is readily available
I delve into my memory recalling the drills
I hear some gems I haven’t heard in awhile
And smile reminiscing the thrills and chills
Oh my God! The Blue Devils were on fire!
Those G-Bugles harnessed such a sound
Big band jazz, swinging hard it kicked ass
My nerdgasm has finally come around
I started remembering all the old songs
Especially Buddy Rich on Channel One Suite
That’s how I came to fall in love with drums
And the ‘86 Devils’ take was just as sweet
As they play over Conquistador and Fantasy
I start recalling discovering Chick Corea as well
Oh My Spanish Heart, it’s like Return to Forever
I dwell in these mementos of time under a spell

LOVE the rhyme scheme in this one, Wally! And am so excited that flomarching will have its own radio station! I do believe, in part, that the energy you put forth in NaPo joined alternates and brought this forth. Particularly enjoyed audio/radio!

Yes, with the DCI season canceled, I'm sure many of us are going down memory lane with these performances. Aside from the music, to me it means the hard work and camaraderie amid young musicians/performers putting on great shows.

I started getting into jazz in the mid 1970s.
Listen to Les Davis on WRVR-FM on my car radio as I drove to work.
I was a big fan of Return to Forever. Got to see them at the Palladium in NYC in 1976. 10th row center, a cloud of pot smoke all around us, many guest artists. A phenomenal time.
My favorite jazz player remains Woody Shaw, trumpeter
I saw him many times in the clubs and to this day he remains a force inside me ....

What I would love to have a time machine and attend these legendary places and events.
Music transports us to those times. I discovered so many classical composers and jazz artists through drum corps because each show, corps and arrangers brought in a wide array of genres. The Blue Devils at that time were exposing us to the jazz element but most of all it was big sound, loud and live.
Thanks for sharing. Sometimes I wish the era would make a come back and a new generation would explore these epic groups.

Jazz never really dies.
I saw RTF many years later in New York at reunion concert. I want to say 2010 or so. They were older but still kicking. The place went crazy for the fusion part. That is a talent I wish I had. Making music with other people has to be great ..

I grew up in a family of band nerds, they were so into it that our house got toilet papered! Those were the good old days. Flomarching might bring back some memories, I love parades too :)

I've been enjoying it, listening to some groups I haven't heard before. Youtube usually takes down some performances because of copyright issues (it gets expensive buying the dvds).
Parades were the best, the crowds cheering and applauding. Happy memories.
