Author's Note
Stay humble! Most of us are lucky...
My father is quite an eccentric man, but he was always very wise. He would fast, sometimes for up to a week, not as an exercise of discipline, but as an exercise in empathy. He did it to understand the pain of true hunger. The pain of well over a half a billion people on this planet...Let's be honest, most of us have never had to experience true hunger, let alone starvation. Most of us can't even imagine what it's like.
As a child, I was chastised and lectured for misusing the phrase, "I'm starving". At the time, I probably rolled my eyes at him... but as an adult, I think I understand.

Dear NB,
You have reminded us of true suffering with this write. It’s been a very long time since I have given prayer to this. As a youngster our parish would collect offerings during certain masses to send relief to famish victims all over the world. Missionary priests would sometimes provide the homily to increase donations. Pictures like these were shown to give thanks as there but for the grace of God. We would do well and better to remember these things. Beautiful write and thanks for reminding me to give better thanks! H🌷

When i was homeless in San Diego, CA, for nearly 2 years, i discovered all too well the trials relating to hunger.
Often my daily life came down to food or hygiene as i knew poor of the latter could lead to other bad shit for my existence.
i fast on a regular basis but for me, it's more of a spiritual gig.
Weighted pic coupled with weighted words
equal conviction?

Oh my GOSH, your dad was BRILLIANT for teaching you that lesson! And for allowing you to witness his conviction. Wow.
I am at a loss of words...I am dumbfounded in a state of awe.
That is simply one of the most beautiful displays of empathy one human can have for another.
