Looking for the Sun
This is a story of the fight for survival. The fight to find light.
The cold frigid air was making it hard to breathe. I hadn't found any place where it was warm for a while now. Ever since the sun went out, the world has been in chaos. My mother told me that she loved me right before she was shot. People were desperate for food and killed each other over it. My mother was the unlucky soul who tried to protect her child and died because of it. Imagine your mother on her knees in front of you, a gun in her face, and you can't do anything to help her. She died in front of me and I held her in my arms and cried out for her to be fine. But she was gone.
I was on my own after that. I fought for food, water, shelter, and anything that had value in this new world. But I was young. I couldn't win any fight against desperate people that were stronger, faster, older, and more damaged than me. I was alone but I didn't realize it fully at the time.
I was in shock from what had happened so I hadn't grieved yet. A woman came along when I was face first in the snow. Snow was all around and the cold air was a death sentence. Blizzards were rampant and they were hard to avoid. She found me and brought me to her home. She warmed me up, gave me food and water, and a blanket. I was confused as no one had shown me this kindness before.
I asked her why she helped me and she told me a story. A few weeks ago, men came into their new home and took her daughter. Her husband was killed trying to protect them and she was left all alone crying for somebody to help her. Nobody came. She had to find a way to survive even though she was depressed. She had to find her daughter. She tells you she helped you because you remind her of her daughter. She couldn't let you die alone. A innocent child left to freeze in the cold. You thanked her and she let you stay.
As time went on, life was harder to live. You both tried to find her daughter but she was nowhere to be found. So day after day you would walk through the snow in your bare feet and wouldn't ever get anywhere. The truth is after a while, it was impossible to see anything. So moving around was a very difficult thing to do. After a while, you ran out of food. You were starving and there was no hope.
Then she told you of a safe haven not too far away. The sun exists there. How does it only exist there is a question no one knew the answer to. It was your only hope. It would be difficult to get to because of the weather but it was possible. She didn't have much time left so she gave you the last of the food and died. You were alone again. A kid trying to find someone is left without anyone again.
You grab what you can and you try to find this safe haven. You trudge through the snow. The wind is fierce and it is hard to make any progress. Your footsteps disappear quickly so it's hard to know where you have been. After hours of travel, you are ready to give up, and then you see it. It looks like it could be the place. You run toward it fighting against the wind trying to push you back. You are desperate to get there. You seem to get close but then the wind would push you back and make you start again. After a while, you finally did it. You made it to the safe haven. You open the door and light envelopes you. You have made it. You finally have found paradise. You see families with their kids, and animals all around you. It seems strange as this seems unreal. You touch the door to get inside the paradise and sunlight hits you. You have made it. You have found the sun.
