through the fire

♪a rhymed, mirrored double octet♪
  
[Octet 1 is a tribute to the resilience of my friend, NewBeginnings.]

years  
a    g   o  
a green tree  
in   t h e   forest  
axes  h u n t e d  me  
but  my  r e s i l i e n c e  
the fellmen dreaded never  
nor  did  i   e m b e r   in  the  fire  
tho fames did ‘gainst my soul conspire  
m y   s p i r i t   k n e w   a   r i v e r  
whose   s o l e   benevolence  
w  a  s     a     m y s t e r y  
by  whose  bequest  
my bruised knee  
k n e w   n o  
f e a r s  
 
§  
 
ache  
softens  
in the ken  
of my ageing  
c o n s p i c u i t y  
though at last i’m fallen  
yet  will  i   r e s i s t   the  urge  
to expire when through the fire men  
burnish  me  in  stark  derision  
stronger still shall i emerge  
though  it  is  appalling  
that  the f i l i g r e e  
of   my   r a g i n g  
shall vile men’s  
c o f f i n s  
m a k e
