Divided, We Fall

Year by year, it stays this way,
Driving us apart.
Day by day, it eats away
At our country, and our hearts.

Divided by our differences,
We fail to see the other's side,
And are quick to get defensive,
As our hearts are filled with pride.

It seems we've blown off course, my friends,
From the goodness in our hearts;
For we focus on our differences,
And the wars which we will start.

If only we could compromise,
Just to find some common ground;
Perhaps we'd find a better way
To turn this ship around.

Author's Note
This was actually a poem that I came up with as a comment on my own poem, "The Greatest Showman". I read it again, and I thought it was worthy as a standalone poem, even though it was a sort of continuance of the aforementioned.
