She puts on the best Christmas (on visit to Shauna)
I stood close to the fire
watched flames
tell stories of their hunger
and satisfaction
I worried
for the two giant socks
hanging down
from the mantle
her tree
stood proud, plump
lavished
with gliterful trinkets
its lights danced, chased
around the periphery
then flashed
a merry choreography
and she, six, (Shauna's princess)
was more excited
than the time her tooth fell out
she learned of the fairy
who'd buy it off her
she shined
because she knew
she knew
because she'd picked
her gifts out
and "sent the list
on time
and not late"
I stood
with my own
bags of offerings
[that I didn't mind giving
just wish
I didn't have to]
and I looked at the way
she'd turned her house
into a beautiful shrine
for a man
who'se never died
because his rich blood
hasn't been allowed
to dry up
wondered
if I should've
brought the kids
down this road
all those years ago
though, if nothing else
sometimes helped
to have two sets of eyes
watching
everything they'd done
then judging them for it
four days til christmas
and I couldn't really say
I feel any of it
but I'll put on a good show
she's put so much work,
wage to it all
and the other she, six
is bursting
with the magic
her mother
bought off me
and sold her
watched flames
tell stories of their hunger
and satisfaction
I worried
for the two giant socks
hanging down
from the mantle
her tree
stood proud, plump
lavished

This poem bursts with a melancholic beauty of life and the familiar consumeristic expectations for the season... I feel like we can all identify with these feelings at some point in time
Though most days it seems we simply succumb to these ritualistic aspects and call it life...
A well written, beautiful glimpse
Happy Holidays by the way, Lepp : )

Hullo
an equilibrium of sorts which sometimes one may snap out of, if only briefly, and see...
I like what you see in the poem, and thank you for coming here to see it, staying to leave your thoughts, and indeed taking a copy
happy holidays to you too, Rachel. with baubles :)~

Dear L,
Wonderful write. So relatable for me, trying to find the unfettered joy and excitment of the season but bogging myself down in the realties that life and choices has realized. This picture is quite a tonic and testament to pushing past one’s own issues and providing awe and fun for the benefit of others (I’m speaking of me 😉) I really love all those outdoor decorations.
“four days til christmas
and I couldn't really say
I feel any of it “. I echo this sentimemt whole heartedly as I am hoping to be lifted with Christmas enthusiasm any time now and I thank you for this share as the pic has definitely and literally brightened my day!

Christmas can be celebrated in many ways and sometimes the quietest, are the truest , whether that be inside you or around you.
One year, I spent the day, walking on the beach with my daughter , this year, I’ll be at work—enjoy it in whatever form it comes to you.
Have a merry !

the narrative ...so typically your subtle & sublime poetic voice... is juz not the eyeful lighted flickering plays you see say so well in grandeur..which reminds me instant of Deepavali & Karthigai Deepam festive occasions here... but the light lights lights...of it all...captures a mishmash of running retrieving sparks to darkness thoughtlines whether welcomed or not ..crisscrossing inevitably with the heavy hung emotions & pastness memories...but what pleases equally is the hope you exude of them the childish innocence the strong feminine & the narrator himself...& that resoluteness shining atop all ...as you ever endlessly end ..with a catch, an inexplicably outweighing heaviness...enwrapped in a thickening ray of hope smiling in a budding magic, overthrowing any notes of gloom perhaps.. Juzme, hope you excuse these blabberations, but intense & immense are the laden emotions & hope amidst all the chaos..in your simplistical genius deliverance ...let it all bless you & dear near ones this season & more..fantab poetry E, shine on merry xmas & 2020 :)

I actually really liked this poem, up until I felt I was being told what to think, about the situation/persons, rather than being shown something objective and the allowance to make my own mind up.
this tends to shut the reader off, I feel. I could offer a more personal and detailed explanation, if you wanna hear it, or care for it even. regardless, I enjoyed reading thru what you felt

Hullo
cheers much for your honesty Dvandva. Initially I wasnt sure why you felt I was trying to tell you what to think, was about to opolagize then figured most all poetry manipulates feelings, plants thoughts on some level
more than that though, I simply gave you my thoughts, how you deal with them is your thing. regardless, I enjoyed reading through how you felt also
Edit: is what I would've said if I was suffering from 'you just don't get me' syndrome:)~
p'raps you've got a point, certainly the "because his rich blood has never been allowed dry" line may be a bit strong, and over simplified
it's never really my intention to change people's beliefs. It'd be gross misconduct of poet. challenge maybe, or like you say hold up for folk to make their own mind.
I appreciate the spirit in which you made your comment, and apologise for my first response. genuinely interested in any other wisdoms you may have alluded to
thanks much for your presence and thoughts, good person

Eamonn, a chara.....
Like the "glitterful trinkets", layered upon the tree, your piece is strung, in row upon row, with strands of emotions--some that shine brightly with happiness, while others seem dimmed, with conflicting feelings of uncertainty...as to whether or not ,the narrator should be feeling sadness, or the spirit of the season! This one resonates deeply for me..on quite a few levels, for You have expressed similar emotions that i--too-- have felt during the holidays.
It can be such a trying time--to be certain! But what created a shiny moment in this piece, is when you wrote about the excitement of "Shauna's little princess!" Indeed-- the pure joy of Christmas, is that which is seen thru the eyes of a child! O....such magic---to be sure!
Thank You for this posting! Its a gift to those of us, that struggle to acquire the Christmas spirit within orselves, for it helps us realize we're not alone in our efforts! A very well done to You!

Día guít, mo chara agus failte isteach
like you say, lady it's the season for such conflict of mind. I've some very happy memories of christmas both in my childhood and indeed being Santa in my adulthood
through the past decade I've found it increasingly difficult to celebrate or take part (in any meaningful way) in corporate Christmas
In all probability, baby jesus would have a fkn epileptic fit if he saw what went down these days. Christmas just ain't what it used to be 2.5K years ago
delighted to see you back 'round these parts, Enchanted one. long may your stay be

I love the intimate details, the slow, measured pace as you unfold the scene. There is a warmth to the flow and I love what Rachel Lauren had to say about it. I agree. There is an earthy quality to your writing that is admirable.

sometimes I write stuff off the cuff. when I read back over them I can be surprised at what's apparent
