The Uninhabitable Earth
How can people live so happily,
Amidst such an unimaginable tragedy?
Unnoticed by the untrained eye,
Our beloved planet begins to die.
The hand we have dealt ourselves,
Will turn our heaven into hell itself,
If we don’t learn a better way,
To show care, in this game of life we play.
It’s time for a dramatic shift,
For our ways have clearly gone adrift;
We must act now, and make it swift,
Or through the ashes we will sift.
The things that we once held so dear,
Will, before our eyes, begin to disappear;
Our beautiful planet, once called home,
But a barren wasteland, it will become.
Amidst such an unimaginable tragedy?
Unnoticed by the untrained eye,
Our beloved planet begins to die.
The hand we have dealt ourselves,
Will turn our heaven into hell itself,
If we don’t learn a better way,
To show care, in this game of life we play.
It’s time for a dramatic shift,
For our ways have clearly gone adrift;
We must act now, and make it swift,
Or through the ashes we will sift.
The things that we once held so dear,
Will, before our eyes, begin to disappear;
Our beautiful planet, once called home,
But a barren wasteland, it will become.

Yeah, it's a sobering thought & I can see the planet heading to destruction. I'd be happy to ditch the plane to sail instead. Just give me longer holidays man! In the UK, we are looking at 2050 for zero emissions but we know that target is too long a wait to save our planet.

Well, thank you, Keith! It's issue that is hard-pressed on my mind. It's good to be able to let out some of this energy in a constructive fashion.

Powerful poem NB. From a Daoist perspective I have great trust in the natural laws of Nature...Dao...there's 8 billion humans now...and we all want dinner tonight...a family...a home...some of us want to fly away for a holiday once a year so we need gas for that lol...for me the planet is merely healing itself...yin><yang...climate change will cut the human population...balance and harmony will follow...until next time of course...our biggest problem is that we "humans" seem to think that this amazing planet actually needs us to live LOL.

Thanks for sharing your perspective, Harry!
I can definitely agree with most of what you said. We are definitely overpopulating, and we are in a natural cycle, which has been accelerated by man. The planet is going to be fine, and nature will recoup. But I'm emotionally attached to things on this planet... Invested. It's really a deep-rooted love of the self, and the other beings on this Earth, that perpetuates this feeling of urgency. I don't want to lose or hurt the people, the animals, or anything else I've grown to love, therefore I will work to minimize actions which may inflict these consequences.
Perhaps you are right about nature fixing itself, but it still doesn't stop me from wanting to be easier on the planet... That's just a moral obligation on my part, I guess. From my perspective, if you love something, it only comes natural to treat it with care and respect. If you had a puppy which you'd grown fond of, and you realized that you were doing something to hurt the dog, surely you would stop? Just because the planet can not yelp, or cry, we can do things that are harmful to the planet, albeit less obvious. And in my eyes, if you love and care about this planet, it is morally obligatory to work towards behaviors that are less harmful to the planet.
*sigh* I just wish more people were less concerned about losing their guns, and more concerned about losing another million acres of trees, or 10 more species.
Anyway, thanks for stopping by to read and comment, Badmalthus. It's nice to hear from you.

Yes NB...I chose not to drive a car and never fly in a plane due to the damage that the burning of oil does. As a Daoist I can only influence others by my actions...which always are about balance and harmony...but one must first have that balance within oneself, otherwise we will just join the masses with hysteria and then the yin><yang confusion arises. I totally agree with David Attenborough, human overpopulation is the biggest problem for our planet...as James Lovelock has always said, burning fossil fuels is not the problem...it is just that with 8 billion of us now wanting to drive cars, fly in planes etc...we are doing incredible damage...but "Mother Nature"...Dao...has laws that we humans can never understand with our silly little anthropomorphic mathematical symbols...our hubris lol. The irony of it all is that we are trying to use the very thing that has caused the problem to solve the problem...science. Modern medicine has increased our life expectancy and of course fertilized our fear of death...or as we Daoists like to call the process...recycling lol.
Lead by example NB and some may follow...but don't live in fear...enjoy the journey...smile as much as possible...and watch out for the hatred that others will impose upon you my friend.
Balance & Harmony...Harry

You both did a stunning collaboration with an imperative statement to us all

Thank you, Legertha. I appreciate your sentiment, and your kind words. It's only through a collaborative effort that we can change the world...
I hope that this poem inspires others to be more conscious of the consequences of their actions... How they are affecting the world? I do feel that it is imperative that we act, though, words and thoughts can only accomplish so much.

Nice collaboration. There are many examples of highly productive small-scale organic farming which produce food for local consumption. Check out: https://www.fermedubec.com/english/
Soil fertility (humus rich soil) is key but is being destroyed by agri-chemicals for nearly 100 years now. There were lots of voices against it in the 1920s & 1930s - but their voices were marginalised by the BigAgric lobby. The future's as good as local communities will make it, I guess.

Thank you for sharing this beautiful piece! The opening question weighs on my mind especially after seeing people have no regard whatsoever for their beautiful surroundings. A real call to action this is! I enjoyed reading it.

Thank you for your sentiment, KP. It is heartbreaking to me that some of us are too self absorbed, in ourselves and our technology, to take the time to stop and appreciate the beautiful natural world that surrounds us. There is so much to be missed... I don't know if they will even miss it... perhaps they no longer have it.
Best wishes...

Dear NB,
I love the deep feelings you use in your poetry in general. In this poem you speak about the earth as your dear home which you love first and you are afraid to lose. I like the poetry that has deep feelings, and your poetry has this special mark.

Joseph,
I feel very strongly about this topic, and so it is easier to write with deep feelings... Or passion. I love this Earth, and I don't want to lose it.
The credit is not all mine for this one, and half goes to my collaborator, PencilScribbles, who feels similarly on the matter.
Anyway, I'm really glad that you really liked this one! Thanks so much for stopping by! Your support is highly appreciated :)
