Modern love stories are strange
It is strange how we meet people today
We have a rectangle of metal, plastic and glass
That tells us information, shows us art,
Sings to us any song we could ever want
A device that shows us people instantly
The world in the palm of our hand
That is how I first came across you
Through this magical rectangle
On those mystical lines that connect us all
We really should have named it something
Much more interesting than the internet
We should have called it the ether
For when looking into it we look into ourselves
I saw your picture and there you were
How odd how much information we put out
You wrote posts about your depression
Posted memes that made me laugh
I stole them unashamedly and saved them away
I didn't talk to you and I don't remember why
I reached out or maybe I thought I needed a new friend
You were kind and we chatted until we switched apps
How swift communication is now
If we were to go back even just a few decades
We never would have met, interacted or
Knew of the others existence at all
How odd this all is to me because now you tell me
How eager you are to kiss me and my heart
Catches in my throat to even hope for it
And now I don't really know what to say
Or how to feel because none of this feels okay
We have a rectangle of metal, plastic and glass
That tells us information, shows us art,
Sings to us any song we could ever want
A device that shows us people instantly
The world in the palm of our hand
That is how I first came across you
