Unspoken Treaties
Love holds on like lichen on a tree
You can rub it off, but it grows back
It's like cutting down an old tree
It will grow back given enough time
Root systems are magical like that
Love lasts far longer than it should sometimes
I never knew just how true it was
Until I stepped into your car
And the smell of you and your voice
Made me feel so unbelievably nostalgic
We joke about our past and our pains
We never dated, never were together like that
We had so many reasons not to
But then I look into your eyes and... God...
What I wouldn't give to have the courage
To lean over and kiss the ever living life force
Out of your beautiful, beautiful face
I hate that I could barely figure out
The very basics of the conversations
We were having when I was just having flashbacks
To when you wanted me like that too
I managed to pull it together, shoved it back down
Knowing you don't want that and maybe
Maybe I don't want that either this time
Maybe it's just the "what it's" getting to me
But then you smile at me and that voice
I just want to hear you talk for hours
To hear your thoughts on everything
But I have to remind myself our friendship
Is a tentative, fragile thing, so easily disappears
To break our unspoken treaty, to cross the line
What could happen... Anything could happen
You can rub it off, but it grows back
It's like cutting down an old tree
It will grow back given enough time
Root systems are magical like that
Love lasts far longer than it should sometimes
I never knew just how true it was
Until I stepped into your car
