a new history
pulling into a parking
lot of a local convenience
store
i saw a young mom and
her small son in the alley
both had boots on and
were splashing in a
water puddle
he was laughing and
smiling,
she was laughing and
smiling at his laughing
and smiling
she picked him up and
he rested his head on
her shoulder as she
turned to walk back to
their apartment across
the alley
the sun unlocked the
cages of the rain clouds
and stood free again
and i could hear music
begin to play inside of
myself
it is events like these
that should be written
into the history of our
species
not the hatreds
not the wars
not the atrocities
not the genocides
just young mothers
and their tiny sons
playing in rain puddles
on an early summer's
evening in August
