Ghosts of Seasoned Pasts
Seems only yesterday
they were about
with a ghostly chill in the bones,
but today we've buried them
in favour of songs set
to feel you with warmth
against a frigid backdrop.
Frankly I never cared
that much for Halloween
but now that there are
Christmas songs
on the radio already,
seems nothing is Hallowed
and sacred anymore:
Bah Bloody Humbug!
Roll on St. Davids day,
at least that happens
without much commercial fuss...

Oh I beg to differ. St David’s Day is my birthday!! I can cause a fuss... 😂
It does seem like a rush though doesn’t it. As soon as January happens, Easter eggs will be back... totally relentless. And all about money. That’s what I can’t stand.
Last year our families agreed not to buy each other presents. It made the whole day much more about family. It was much nicer.
Thanks for the little humbug rant :)

St. Georges day used to be the quietest one but now a pall of nationalism and possible xenophobia hang over it making it controversial. I'm not far off St. Daviid's day with my birthday!
I don't mind the Christmas to New Year bit as that's pretty much an end of year celebration that is conventional nonsense; whereas Easter eggs in January is heresy!
Most years my family find stuff they like and hoard it up for the year and then have someone else wrap and gift it to them: takes all the stress of buying out of the equation and means we get what we wanted.

I agree with the rant, how do we get to the point where we pay good money for something so shitty and plastic in every sense. Nice poem you capture the mood of Christmas starting in October perfectly.

seems Christmas has now become the 'Kinder Surprise' of the Holidays: just a bunch of disappointing sweetness in colourful wrapping that honestly would be nicer if it was one thing or the other!

A fellow holiday humbug here! I've always loved the fact that the Christian church calls the time that falls outside of the Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter seasons "ordinary time". How relaxing, to just have ordinary time, without all the decorations and commercial crap! Seems that would make the few celebrations more meaningful and worth the effort, to me.
And as a parent, it's far too much hype to live up to. The bullshit people go through to make things ultra-special for their kids ALL THE TIME (isn't that the opposite of special...?) just blows my mind.
Guess you hit a nerve, sorry for the rant! Nice write. :)

Thankfully I don't have to face Christmas as a parent, I can imagine just how aggravating and stressful it must be.
Plenty of the season songs sing about wanting it to be snowy and Christmas for more than one day; something anyone who travels and is a parent would definitely be against.
Really says something when everyday is special but only when connected to and advert or product.

It is always the same blasted songs that are nice once, mildly interesting twice, and a bloody annoying nuisance past three times. its like they actively want people to become depressed, stressed, suicidal, and anywhere but work!

“to feel you with warmth” is an amusing pun. The poem as a whole is a jolly cynic’s reflection on the season. I like your more informal style.

I seem to have shaken off my rhyming alliteration and replaced it with a more prosaic talking style: it suits but seems too world-weary and grizzled!
