♪PENchants♪

a chantification of Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 KJV

prologue:  v1
let me pen a chant to bless you
unto which my heart is given
for i have a penchant for all
purposes under the heaven:

quartet i:  v2
like the wise Ecclesiastes
first i have a chant for living
and when all your living ceases
then i have a chant for dying

in a world of hungry children
farmers need a chant for planting
and when time has come for reaping
i shall walk the fields penchanting

quartet ii:  v3
though my ink is never eager
i can pen a chant for killing
yet my canvas spreads wide open
to compose a chant for healing

trust me for a chant to break down
barriers and stumblingblocks
or a chant to build a mountain
whence to leverage all your stocks

quartet iii:  v4
for your spirit bruised and broken
watch my weeping chant exploding
on the parchment of your angst and
watch my laughing chant uploading

when sad circumstance besets you
don’t forget my chant for mourning
and when happiness befriends you
i’ll create a chant for dancing

quartet iv:  v5
if by chance you should require a
chant for casting stones away
i will pen it equal with a
chant for gathering stones that stray

i’ve a penchant for embracing
when love’s sickle’s compass calls you
and a chant to quit embracing
when stark solitude befalls you

quartet v:  v6
when life’s bounteous streams attend you
there’s a chant for getting presents
and a chant for losing all things
waits for those who court discontent

there’s a special chant for keeping
things you want to stow away
and a chant to serenade when
there are things to throw away

quartet vi:  v7
when the situation warrants
it i have a chant for rending
and when time to heal the breach is
here i have a chant for mending

when the wise would hold his tongue i
have a penchant just for silence
and a chant to get men speaking
when they need poetic license

quartet vii:  v8
custom-made my chants for eros
filia and agapé
but a somber chant  for hating
will roll out on boxing day

when the battle cry has sounded
i’ll advance a chant for war
but my penchant for sweet peace on
earth will heal the deepest scar

This is the longest poem I have ever written; I hope a few DU members will take the time to read it. Perhaps the reader will start with the Bible reference and that will make it obvious why this poem is in full control of its own length for the sake of its own message -- and not so much for the writer's self-indulgence.
All writing remains the property of the author. Don't use it for any purpose without their permission.
