[let me clarify here...this ain't about myself but poets in general here] poets in general like any other artists are deep observers/take a philosophical perspective on things...making them the obvious misfits amongst the ordinary folks... hence the the phrase i guess...he/she is truly fuckt...

It is because poets (& artists generally) see and experience life more sensitively/deeply/fully, that they are misfits to the superficial norm - and yet it is their differing vision which is what enables their vital art to happen.

In Oct 1963, John F. Kennedy (3 weeks before he was assassinated) gave a eulogy the great American poet Robert Frost who had died earlier that year (and who read a poem at Kennedy's inauguration in Jan 1961).  
Kennedy said of poets/artists "“If art is to nourish the roots of our culture, society must set the artist free to follow his vision wherever it takes him. We must never forget that art is not a form of propaganda; it is a form of truth  …   When power corrupts, poetry cleanses” (JFK).  
I think this cleansing counter-culture role inherent in poetry, uncomfortable as it is for poets, is also a motivation to press on regardless { just a thought   :))  }

just wow!! i absolutely echo that... been my observation/quest/curiosity since childhood...the soceity's treatment of artists/poets/philosophers... yet their adoration well after they're gone. I see a clear pattern ... people using term...ahh he/she/artist was way before his/her time....
