What Really Matters
I don't care about all the numbers in your bank account
Or the horses under the hood of your car, my love
I don't give a damn about what you do for a living
As long as you love what you do
But tell me
Have your parents set a good example on how to love and be loved in return?
And
If your friend needs someone to talk to in the middle of the night, is it your number they dial?
Do tell, when you look at me, what is it you truly see in these multicolored eyes of mine?
exactly... that's what I thought.
Or the horses under the hood of your car, my love
I don't give a damn about what you do for a living
As long as you love what you do
But tell me
Have your parents set a good example on how to love and be loved in return?

Lovely. Have you ever read 'The Invitation' by Oriah Mountain Dreamer? It's one of the most beautiful poems ever written ( imho ). This one contains the same essence as that one does. It feels like someone who is fed up with the materialistic for-show-only, and seeks real instead.

That is a very beautiful poem indeed. Thank you so much for linking me to it, I honestly needed to read that more than I thought I did.
I will take real and imperfect over showy any day! ;-)

If someone can make a living doing what they love, that's sure a rare bonus - but the final question is keenly identified; nicely done.

Thank you for the comment, Josh. It is something rare indeed, it's not that easy for everyone and it certainly isn't always the 'safest' choice.

I stepped away from this site for a while, came back today, and I am so, so happy to see you're still posting on here. Your writing is like my higher self speaking to me a lot of the time, reminding of what actually matters and what doesn't. I hope you do well in the poetry competition! :)

Dear D,
What a lovely poem! The last stanza and closing line are hauntingly beautiful. It made me consider the question- does one really know their partner?
Excellent write! H🌷

That is exactly the feeling I was writing it with, dear H. I am so happy that someone deciphered it and felt it just the same as I did. Though I am a firm believer of everyone interpreting words in their own way with their own meaning. It is nice when someone gets so close to the writer's world.
