Scared of the Dark
Love me hard enough to leave a mark
As long as my heart beats that’s where you are
Somewhere in my mind you’re under cover
Always taking time for secret lovers
King of my nightmares
Creep on the stairs
Kill me with kindness
Mold me with broken hands
Take my confession
It’s a mistake of the heart
I could never love someone who’s scared of the dark

I give this quietly
With socked feet
And caved forward shoulders
Bent over a soot-stained fireplace
That bristles to life at my word
A basket of flowers that lived through hard storms
Rash-red leaves
Vodka for warmth
Please, body of mine
Allow what is good inside
Easily for longevity
See, my racing mind,
To it that I think
Thoughts deep on the rind
Of joy-saturated fruit
Liberated from insects
And slippery rich in fertile dew
That I may live the next year with as many hands as I desire to...

When you feel yourself drowning
Know you have the strength to swim
That the duck weeds and piranhas
Have no teeth and satin skin

It's funny, the things that stick
Like licorice to your teeth
The good times can haunt you more
The bad times feel like peace
It was never like this before.
I've never felt so twisted.

Off Road
I was brave so I trusted you
I was strong so I supported you
I was full so I believed in you
I was wise so I prepared to lose
I was self-concious so I lowered standards
I was understanding so I made exceptions
I was mistaken.
Now I see a different light
A future with fewer tears
Now I know what I am worth
And that a strong man can take my strength
Perpetual kindness is a sign of distrust
The next time this happens, I will expand it.
There will be no more excuses
There will be no more concessions

The storm quiets itself so I can hear you
And as you whisper
A blade of light strikes five miles away
We’ll later find a tree cracked in half
Its peak black and you’ll say,
This is harder than it should be.
But right now, I follow.
You lead me through the woods and back home
You raise mugs and say, what’s good, and I take out hot cocoa
You leave before it starts raining because tomorrow you’ll be right
This is harder than it should be but when you’re gone? Something in me dies.
I heard it once before that life goes like this ...

The Girl Who Became a Mermaid (Part 1)
Riding a seahorse
In chase after the squid man
Stole the hairpin my grandma gave me
We glide on currents
Surf on his water tracks
And catch him just before the algae
“Wait,” I tell him
“I’ll give you one thing.”
And I throw him a piece of gold.
He rolls it around
And content with it’s shine
He hands me my hairpin then rolls
“That was your ticket
Your way to get home”
Seahorse looks to the surface with fear.
“It doesn’t matter
I’m not going back”
There are so many mysteries here.
I know...

And This Big World That Will Go On Without Us
Ritual madness feverish fire
It’s the blur of your body dancing
Nimble and drunk on wine
He has the chaos of the hunter
And the fight inside the prey
But it’s me who pulls him under
It’s my hand that feeds his flame
Ember slow and moon sliver light
But we claim this sheer second
Alone and stumbling through the night
Until the fall that keeps us down
Curled up at his side
Bones sing from under the ground
And I smile at this short life
It’s the blur of your body dancing

Weed flowers shine a little brighter

I Dreamed I Grew Horns
I find myself there again and again
Back to nights we thought the stars might send a feeling
Different to the ones that clawed our throats open
So close to us, we thought we’d become them
But the stars, so far, so old and wise
Would see us through the monster times
As we hid, hearts like firecrackers in our chests,
As we weeped for who we used to be
We modeled ourselves after the gods in the sky
We became what we seeked.
I still go back there, time and again
My old home with the floorboards pulled up from the hurricane
Wishing for a...
