Perennials

BARREN
she sits contemplating
dark earth bare
it's structure diverse
worms are busily chewing, burrowing
their slippery skin
turning over rich soil

SEEDS OF HOPE
in her hands she holds
many seeds
tossing them to their soil grave
showering them
in a gentle bath
they are swallowed whole

THE BURSTING
hard shells soften in dewey turf
cracking open like an egg
slowly, deliberately, for days
throwing hairy roots into dirt
with the force of a bullet
seed now a protective helmet

THE RISING
raising their covered heads
color green deepening
seeds split wide, no longer enveloping
leaves that protrude
breaking free from their small prison
they spring into unparalleled growth

FLOURISH
how quickly the stems
become shooting stars
reaching for the blue light
leaves breaking free from their
tubular threshold
small buds nestled in leaf axis

BECOMING
greening buds swell
a quickening of anticipation
the birthing of fragrant blossoms
unveiled, outer leaves break open
petals protrude and extend towards light
unraveling in warm yellow

BLOOM
where you are planted
