This really is a well-written write, Mel. The only word that seems disjointed to me is 'reaching'. I would simply say out of shame, and into light.

Thank you Ahavati. You know I appreciate your feedback. I agree, "reaching" creates an awkward rhythm to the line. As to avoid using "into" again, I edited to "out of shame, toward the light". The syllable count seems better.
