"This Distance" is one of my favorite Levertov activist poems. I always loved how she painted to contrast of protestors with the actual suffering of imprisoned humans. She almost depicts it as comical between liverwurst sandwiches compared to grains of rice, then to reference decent food in a few hours. As far as the latter inspiration, "At the Justice Department November 15, 1969", it's as though she expresses joy over being gassed, which provides relief in suffering with those who are earnestly suffering, with the exception of knowing it's not death - the only difference separating the current circumstances. Other than one wanting to be there - and the other not.
