flytrap

fate says i
flourish only
to perish in you...

you ask me
do i know you
i do but i don’t
you ask me
would i love you
i would but i won’t

you ask why
don’t i kiss you
i should but i shan’t
you ask why
don’t i leave you
i could but i can’t

for all my
heart is bleeding
and i am afraid
are these the
circumstances
of which love is made

your blooms are
crowned with thistles
that leave me so torn
your sunshine
is the cradle
where shadows are born

your charm is
my bewitchment
your splendor my snare
your sweetness
is my poison
your devil my dare

i ask why
can’t you love me
yet spare me the pain
you answer
are there roses
that bleed without stain

surrender
i my heart then
my passions renew
i perish
on your altar
i live now in you

...faith says i
perish only
to flourish in you

Author's Note
This is a ballad of sacrificial love. A hapless creature (bee? butterfly? lover?) is consumed by an artful flytrap ("flytrap"?). The opening and closing tercets represent the gaping jaws of the flytrap and between them the fate of the victim. Taken together, they form the closing sestet and could be read as such.

The Venus flytrap is a carnivorous plant native to North and South Carolinaa. It wins its prey by its bright, enticing colours. Charles Darwin described it as "one of the most wonderful [plants] in the world."
