bittersweet
"How sweet are Your words to my taste,
sweeter than honey to my mouth!" (Psalm 119:103)
her labour
starts at sunrise
wings waggle dancing to the mountainside
secrets to
sip from flowers
content to bloom to keep her satisfied
she swallows
from the fountain
reserving naught for her own appetite
for duty
rests upon her
back to the royal stock to haste her flight
she toils till
mercy sunset
cool shadows drape across her fettered breast
tomorrow
new day labour
must keep the kingdom sweetened by her quest
her tattered
wings are failing
but mercy bears no pity for her pain
off to the
hills she struggles
knowing she will never see her queen again…

Author's Note
Worker bees literally work themselves to death. When they are too battered to work, active bees push them out of the hive to keep the colony healthy. In the work season when flowers are blooming, they may die after only a few weeks outside the hive. Their lives are cut short from the rigors of flying—sometimes dozens of miles each day. During its hectic working life, a single worker bee may add a mere one-twelfth of a teaspoon of honey to its colony.

Englishman Blake is one of my favourite poets, along with American poetess Emily Dickinson. Curious that Blake was unrecognised during his lifetime! He is now regarded as a seminal figure in the poetry and visual arts of the Romantic Era.

You even glean fact from my fiction.
Were I "an actual, real poet," the sea would be content to be my ink. But my tiny inkwell is still full and there are many poems to be born.

Goodness, can I clench water in my naked fist?! The knowledge of what I've missed is bittersweet, for their lines are gone out over all the earth, and who can bring them back?
