Shine

‍‍‍‍‍‍‍We are the unborn stars of our own play
on a permanent raincheck
'cause it's always raining in our heads
and I spend my days hiding backstage
when all I want to do is hold an umbrella up to my fears
and dare to shine
though I doubt anyone is watching
when there are a billion stars in the sky tonight

And I'd like to think I'm the master of my own destiny
but I've always been a drifter
nothing and no one could pin down for long

And I wear my passions like I wear my clothes
impermanently
'cause I've never had enough faith
to hold onto any dream
long enough to see it become my reality

I've got a list of failures so deep
they'll drown me if I stare into that abyss
I've got a list of successes
I wear like an invisible denim jacket
covered in the patches of indelible pride
that'll you'll probably never get to see
'cause I've never been good at wearing myself like the neon jacket
I kinda wish I was

We are the unborn stars of our own play
on a permanent raincheck
'cause it's always raining in our heads

So pass me an umbrella
and maybe we can turn off the rain
and let ourselves shine tonight
